Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May conduct a valuable piece of consumer research with their attempts to improve and enhance the ambulance.

Starting with a belief that current ambulances, which are usually very big and based on a diesel van, are in need of a rethink, the presenters go their separate ways to focus on the one area they think could be improved. May focuses on passenger comfort, Hammond tries to improve response times by getting other drivers out of the way more effectively, while Clarkson confronts the same issue with the invention of what he calls 'the sports ambulance'.

Their three very different creations are then put to the test with a series of severe and often messy challenges, culminating in a fast reaction to a spectacular emergency.

Also in this episode, F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo is the star in the Reasonably Priced Car.

Behind the scenes: Episode 3, Series 22

Can the telly boys improve the British ambulance service? And will Daniel Ricciardo top the TG track leaderboard? See you Sunday...

Want a behind the scenes sneak peek at this Sunday's Top Gear? You're in the right place.

Episode 3 sees the boys bring a bit of TG magic to the world of ambulances. Response rates need improving, see, and who better to speed up our propulsion of the sick and injured than Jeremy, Richard and James? Better not answer that, actually.

Needless to say, the cars they choose to spin the ambulances from wander from convention a little. Look carefully in the pictures that follow, and you might just see one of them lurking in the background...

The other highlight of Sunday's show is a comeback for the Suzuki Liana Reasonably Priced Car, which means only one thing: an F1 driver is having a crack at the special motorsport lap board.

It's the turn of loveable Aussie Daniel Ricciardo. Is he as affable in real life? Can he translate demon overtaking skills in an F1 car into Hamilton-bashing speed in a 13-year-old Japanese saloon car? And the big one: does he ever stop smiling?

It was one of their fun cocking about, we modified some vehicles aimed at the kiddies and young at heart episodes, so I knew what to expect. I wasn't disappointed and laughed numerous times. The best part was Jeremy and Richard having a good laugh when James' tailgate flew open and the glass shattered.I liked their Thunderbirds homage, loved James walking like a marionette puppet. Daniel Ricciardo was a fun, energetic and enthusiastic guest. I was glad the news was back this week, it's one of my favorite parts of the show. James' in studio ensemble was a rather interesting combination of colors.

In fact, they were, in many important ways, rather unsuccessful. And deathy.

But, as you’ll see in this exclusive backstage vid, Richard reckons that, with just a few minor tweaks, his revolutionary V8-powered, bio-hazard-inspired ambulance concept could still transform the NHS.

Well, he did it. The smiliest man in F1 – and possibly the world – has usurped world champ Lewis Hamilton at the top of our F1 leaderboard.

And not just by a bit, but by a whole lot. Seven-tenths of a second separate Daniel Ricciardo’s and Hamilton’s times. And in the world of F1, seven tenths is roughly equal to one year, give or take a day…

And we were there, behind the scenes, to witness Danny’s preparations for his record-breaking lap. Should you wish, you can still catch Episode Three of series 22 on the BBC iPlayer, but these bits most definitely will not be in it.
