Am watching this for like the millionth time. Is it wrong that in the depth of despair, James digging like a mad man to save them from the snow, I am enjoying the lovely grunting noises he is making?! lol
Loved the bit where Dr Kristian explains the danger of getting a frost bitten p*nis... but I cant find the link to that oddly enough!!!

There is so much deliciousness in the Polar Challenge! If only my laptop wasn't upstairs I'd stick it on right now But unfortunately, negotiating stairs while tipsy and wearing cowboy boots can only lead to badness... (I do have clothes on too)

Some info about the episode from wikipedia
The vehicles used in the challenge were two 2006 Toyota Hilux double cab 3.0l diesel pickup trucks and one Toyota Land Cruiser 120. A trailer on 38" tires was also used to carry part of the equipment and fuel. One Hilux was used by the presenters and was fitted with camera and sound recording equipment, the other two were used by the film crew, two driver/repair experts and one polar expert. All vehicles underwent the same extensive modifications to make them suitable for the Arctic conditions. The major modifications to the trucks included:
Work began on the vehicles in December 2006, at Resolute, Canada and testing of the vehicles began in February 2007 and continued until April 2007.
On 20 April 2007, the Top Gear presenters arrived and began their cold weather training. This intensive training involved a two-night expedition camping on sea ice, where the presenters learned how to erect a tent, build a makeshift aircraft runway, pull a sled and deal with polar bears.
The expedition set out from Resolute, Nunavut at 1300 on 25 April 2007. The destination for this day was Bathurst Island.
Travel on the first three days was fairly easy. Things got more difficult on the 28th.
On the morning of 2 May, the GPS system confirmed that the team had reached the magnetic north pole.

Actually quicker than I thought, ta for that I'm sure for Jezza and James it didn't look that quick. If you have Google Earth and bored, it 's real easy checking out their route.

Who are these people who ring up the bbc and complain about everything if you don't like the show don't watch it. I must admit i loved it when they cleared the bolder field i thought Jeremy was going to get stuck to the ice when he bent down to kiss it and loved James May jumping up and down with his little dance.

I'm watching this on Dave right now. I only came in on the last few minutes of it. James's grunting and heavy breathing were affecting me nicely. ;D Jeremy always looks so adorable when he laughs. I thought Richard looked nice with a goatee. They all looked pretty fetching and rugged with facial hair. ;D I did notice something at the end though. The part where Jeremy says, "two middle age men, barely fit (they left out "and mostly drunk")......"

I'm watching it on Dave at the mo too. I've given up. The entire thing is ruined. They have cut out the bit with the g & t, the bit with the wine in the tent, the bit with Jezza first putting the tent up, a bit where they're going over the very thin ice and the truck nearly goes through it and he swears, and it's only just half way through! Who are they protecting exactly? I'm beginning to think it won't be long before we start burning books.

Cut it out! Good grief what's the world coming too! This was the first time I'd read the problems with the "frostbitten genitalia" In what manner is that sexual! I'm off to hide my books now.

I watched it again after dinner and they also took out the part where Jeremy and James were both asleep while driving. I really wanted to see that again. They both look sweet and boyish when they sleep.

I assume the p*nis bit went as I didn't catch that bit; the bit where their tent blew away when they are training; the bit where Jezza says it's very cold out here and very lonely and as Maureen said, the bit at the end where they were two middle aged blokes who were mainly drunk, or rather not drunk because that would be very very dangerous. God and that bit above as maureen has just noted. So no. Edit - I was interested to see how they left in the bit where she beats the dogs though.

Ok to beat animals but not to drink G&T. Makes perfect sense. To idiots!

I guess the reson it was left in is because it was more essential to the storyline than the bits they left out. It may have looked cruel, but Richard himself pointed out that the dogs meant the world to the woman, but they were pack animals and not pets.
They always film loads more than they can use in either TG edition, be it the full-lenght one or the edited edition we see on Dave, prime and outside the UK. It's irritating in regular episodes, in the specials it becomes downright painful. (In the America special some of the jokes fell flat, because of cuts they had made earlier.)

The "American" version of the American episode was so heavily edited it bears little resemblance to the version on the internet. And I doubt very seriously if we will ever get the Polar episode on BBCA.

FINALLY! Got to watch after it aired here tonight--left in the G&T portion (to the delight of me--told my DH that they caught flak for that and he was appalled that there was any outcry), saw his majesty on the throne twice, and did get to see the lovely shots that the stills came from (in the hat and looking off to the distance and the sleeping stubbly-faced one.....thudthudthudthud).
AND BBCA have promised a new season starting end of January. When the commercial ran, my DH said, "Yeah, new season...from 1984???".
me lurves the Polar Special. ;D

I felt so scared for them watching that one, especially when they're in the truck on the thin ice and you can see James flinch for the window. They all looked so cold and miserable. But I'm amazed that they were out there doing that in April 2007 -- six months or so after Hammond nearly got killed.

BBC America's edit was rubbish.
Amongst the stuff cut out was the bit where the boys see the frozen manhood, the bit with the chocolate bars and the talking Jesus, and the tent scene where James gives Jezza the bottle of wine.
Worse yet, the "I Get Around" sequence was replaced with generic music, ruining the bit completely.
At least the boys' "training" made it in, as well as the Bumper Dumper Leg!Porn, the epic James with a gun clip, and Jezza Attenborough looking at the polar bear babies.

I watched it again too - there are some episodes of TG that I will always stop and watch, and this is one of them ;D
Must dig out the extended version and watch that again soon. It is just brilliant telly!

Another interesting find, equally enlightening - but please don't read it if you're the sort of person who gets annoyed if you find out that one or two little details of the final programme don't quite match the reality. (We know that anyway, but some get really agitated about that kind of thing!) www.derryjournal.com/news/local/cool-at-campsie-1-2117740
