Richard Hammond, the Top Gear presenter, has attacked the Government for charging motorists too much tax. He called on Gordon Brown to reduce the cost of fuel, joining the growing chorus of voices who have criticised the Prime Minister over soaring petrol prices.
"They've got to cut the percentage they take," the presenter says in an interview in The Daily Telegraph's television and radio guid Hammond, 38, who almost died filming a stunt for Top Gear, was speaking ahead of the news series of the BBC2 show, which starts tomorrow (Sunday).
In a wide-ranging interview, he suggests introducing a system of "positive points", which would see motorists rewarded for driving in a considerate fashion.
"At the moment you get points for speeding. Fair enough," he says, "but you should get positive points for doing something good, like letting someone out at a junction."
Hammond was almost killed two years ago when the jet-engined car he was driving crashed at 288 mph.
He suffered a brain injury but remarkably was well enough to return to the show four months later. e.
"Because the people it affects most are those who thought life was going quite nicely – nice house, nice car, maybe not brand new but a nice people carrier for the family – and suddenly they can't afford to get to work. That's not fair."

Good on you, Richard. We need something done. Just take the government subsidy off the damn petrol.

Yes!! I agree great Richard has said something. My driving instructor told me how much he has to pay for his car for lessons a week, I couldn't quite believe it!
At last someone finally saying what we are all probably well, I hope we are thinking it!
Gordon-Put the price down please!!

I totally agree with him. Also who on earth is the journalist who wrote this. How is his crash in any way relevant. Every quote from Hammond is about the rising cost of fuel and then the journalist seems obsessed with his cash which has nothing to do with the article. Sorry it was just an awkward read and I'm pedantic like that.

(Freudian slip though, Gote, "obsessed with cash" !)

Well done, Rich. Now I'm even more in love with him than I was before! (I didn't think that was possible xD)
GoTeamTG, he probably put in the bit about the crash to pad it out a bit more, cuz there wasn't much to be said. Which just shows it's a bit of a pointless article, really.
