It's from a WW2 poster campaign that was (luckily!) never used. The poster was produced in 1939, at the start of the war, and was meant to be used should the Nazis have ever reached Britain. They were never used, and only a few of them ever got seen by the general public.

Oh, that's hysterical. Did they really think that would work?

I have a 'keep calm and carry on' poster in my office - it's very apt! ;D Although not always the case

Oh, that's hysterical. Did they really think that would work? It did work. That's how we won the war. ;D That and our tea. Oh and the fact that we had a very small but very talented army, navy and airforce.

I have the "Keep Calm and Carry On" shirt in blue. I liked it when I saw James wearing it and I'm a bit of a history buff so when I saw the shirt in a catalog I just had to get it. But today I just ordered a shirt that has the crown insignia and says in the same font and style as the Keep Calm Shirt "Don't Panic" and "Always Carry a Towel". I just loved it! Thought it was great! (It is a reference from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" for those of you who don't know.) How big of a geek does that make me that I wear shirts with not only history references but sci fi references too?

I've just got one of the mugs of the KCACO series. It says
Your courage Your cheerfulness Your resolution WILL BRING US VICTORY
and the panel is blue, not red. I like it.

I have a mug that says NOW PANIC AND FREAK OUT. I also have a t-shirt that says DRINK BEER AND CARRY ON. I believe Oz and James have been presented with those recently, but I've had mine for ages

Amazingly enough, I'm wearing my Keep Calm and Carry On t-shirt today. It's the purpley/maroon colored one. I may have to get a new one soon. I'm wearing this one out! ;D

Oh, that's hysterical. Did they really think that would work? Yeah, they did. The world's changed a lot in the past seventy years... people's viewpoints quite considerably. It's the concept of the "Stiff Upper Lip" and all that, chari. (I must admit, as an Australian, I kind of find that hilarious. Especially since the English pretty much turned their backs on Australia not so long after the Battle of Britain... "so long, and thanks for all the extra soldiers" was the implicit message - and our arses were only saved with the considerable help of our northern Pacific allies the USA. Google "the Brisbane Line" sometime - no kidding, my mother could have grown up speaking Japanese. And thus were the nascent beginnings of a trust which saw, amongst other cooperation, the ANZUS treaty, as well as Australia's culture turning away more from the British and embracing a more American view of life. Oh dear, this is beginning to sound like a Modern History and Sociology lecture, so I'll zip my lip now... )

Lew, that was meant in the same gentle teasing manner that James employs with the French. Please don't take offence. But yeah, Duchess Threadjack was about to strike again, so...
um, where would an overseas laddie or lass buy one of these "Keep Calm" t-shirts, without spending a bomb? (good question... surely?)

I got mine from keepcalmandcarryon.com. Of course, they had all the colors as well as all sorts of other products with the logo - mugs, bags etc.
I live in the US so I would assume they would ship to Australia as well. ;D

.... That is a link to where I got my shirt. (I'm in the US - I find it difficult to keep track of who is from where but you are in the US too right fs?) Until February, you'd have been right. But the passport still says "Australia" on it, and that's my postal address again these days. Thanks for the tips, though! And DMC, you too. I might get started on my Christmas shopping... (for others, not JUST me! LOL) ;D

I was walking to the local dene with a few friends the other day and a biker (with a rubicund complexion and startling blue eyes, I may add! ) beeped, nodded, stuck his thumb up and grinned at my shirt. FINALLY someone got the joke *heavy sigh* Sadly, that made my day more than the 20 mile ramble through the beatific countryside. Major LOL. Love it ;D

Bit late but I've just read this thread for the first time. I spotted the KCACO poster positioned outside a shop in my hometown Brisbane in January this year.... at the height of our dreadful floods.....very apt, I thought at the time.

The signs, bags and stuff are cool. We have 'Don't panic, don't panic' on the loo door and my daughter has 'Keep calm and carry on' and 'Oh sh*t were f*@ked' on her bedroom door. In the kitchen 'Now panic and freak out' if you saw my timings for cooking you would know why that is so appropriate.

That made me chuckle - in a very British way, of course!
(I can remember coming back late from a gig quite a few years ago and listening to the Radio 4 midnight news - every single item that night had us in hysterics, as every single item was about how rubbish the British were in some situation that had happened, and after every one someone in the car said, "We're cr@p". By the time it got to the end of the bulletin I could hardly drive as tears of laughter were rolling down my face!)

The poster/slogan has made its way over here, largely through intellectually-trendy places like Barnes & Noble or hipster-irony vendors. I guess it just seems so quintessentially British to us (and to you too, it seems). But that hasn't stopped the proliferation of memetic parodies, largely because it's just so easy to do.

I was looking for the mugs in this shop that sell them - but they had sold out. So I got one of these instead. It's on the kitchen window so I can look at it whilst I do the washing up lol.

I forgot I had one of these to share. This was on a sandwich board on State Street in front of a coffee shop for I think most of February and March. It might've even been there for a good chunk of April. I took the picture fairly early on in the protests...there's snow on the sign.
