Personally, I like both the long hair and the short hair. After all, it's still the same bloke, and still the same remarkable mind beneath the locks, whatever their length. I realise that I might be in the minority here, but I think the new haircut looks really good.

Am I the only person left here who prefers James' hair at least mid-length, if not longer?
Am I therefore also the only person here who is grateful that James' hair seems to grow rather quickly?

So does mine; I only recoloured the roots about three weeks ago, but already they're just beginning to show again! I must admit that mid-length is my personal favourite, but I do like this new shorter cut as well. Actually, I like his hair at any length, but then I'm easily pleased!

You're not the only one Dit! I like his hair enough the way it is in Man Lab but my favorite length is when it is long like it was just before this fall when he cut it. Thank goodness it grows fast!

I agree too. The Man Lab style was great, I think it really suited him. The shorter 'do seems a bit too sensible. ;D But he still seems to have a fringe of sorts, so I'm happy with that.

Just seen James' new short hair on Top Gear website. I hope he is going to grow it long again! Short hair doesn't suit him!

Got such a shock when I saw Top Gear this evening and saw James had cut his hair! I like the long hair best but James is lovely whatever length his hair is. Am looking forward to Boxing day for my next May fix!

James circa the first season of Wine Adventures with the side swept fringe.... mmmmm when I first saw the short hair I balked but I'm getting used to it now... it certainly beats his short hair 90's look. Attachments:

I'm with most of you in liking his hair either short or long, but am becoming increasingly convinced that the shorter hair makes him look younger. But maybe that's just me?

becoming increasingly convinced that the shorter hair makes him look younger. You know I thought that too TJMFS, but thought it was just me as well ;D I think it does! Oh and welcome to the JMB (I see you're a newbie) *waves*

I like James, regardless of whether he has short or long hair... ...that also means that I like his current hairstyle. (yes, the really short hair)...

I think that photo of him with short hair was taken quite a few years ago - but he does looks rather cute in that shot. I'm not sure he'd look so good with hair that short now he's older. However, to my mind anything is preferable (this is my personal taste I hasten to add and I know lots won't agree!) to the half way house, neither short nor long, Auntie type shampoo and set he was sporting on the last Top Gear!!
You will gather I really do not like his latest style - but his hair grows as I type! Hurray!

I think the short hair photo is about 1998, in his book 'May on Motors' he mentions the haircut in his article about the Mazda MX5. And being a hairdresser I can firmly say no I don't have one lol.

Just seen James' new short hair on Top Gear website. I hope he is going to grow it long again! Short hair doesn't suit him! I had been wondering why he cut it. Now I know: "'It was going a bit grey and I’m getting a bit old to pretend I’m a rock and roll star,' he admits cheerfully." (Evening Times, 06/21/11) But...but...those long, steely locks were making you look like a very sexy, devilish symphony conductor, James. Made me want to dust off my French Horn and start practicing again. Ah well. Still, though. Man is sexy regardless of hair length.

I've always loved James' longer hair, but the shorter version is growing on me. No pun intended. It is truly becoming a part of James by being just as unruly as his longer hair was. ;D ;D Some of the pics and screen caps have really showed how sexy he can look with the shorter hair. ;D

Long, please... long long long. Give me a guy with hair, long beautiful haaairr.. As close to one length as possible and pushed back off his forehead, like so.

I'm a firm believer that his hair was really flattering and sexy when it was long, and nothing will shake me from that. When the medium length cut came along, I didn't like it at first, then learned to live with/like it. Now the shorter cut's come along I didn't like it at first and I'm still not sure, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I can't help thinking he could have risked leaving it long despite getting greyer, as he would have looked intellectual and wise - I'm not going to say distinguished, it's too corny! (And he's hardly in a job where the bosses insist on employees looking conventional, nor is he noted for his restrained sense of style, and I mean that in a good way!) My preference Mid-length at its best The short cut I'm trying to get used to

But, considering how much time is being spent discussing his hair in one context or another: Last episode's bet is hardly even mentioned. Am I the only one begging for a swift breakdown of at least one of those cars? Or are everyone in denial? Please, please, please let there be no barber in the studio in ep 5 ...

I re-watched the first Hornby challenge the other day, and he truly was a striking figure back in 2009 with the old trademark mane. I quite liked last year's mid-length cut, which certainly suited him, but I'm not so keen on this year's shorn look, my main problem with it being that it's just not a very good cut. It looks a bit like he did it himself - the balance is all wrong.
My own hair is short and, as the victim of a million iffy cuts, I tend to scrutinise these things!
