I swear, I think James and my husband are mentally linked. Husband and I were talking during lunch about getting a new car soon. I don't know if this will truly come to pass, but he was talking about that and how he doesn't feel affected by the credit crunch, and I come home after my son's practice to read this article. De ja vu all over again. *twilight zone music* Thank you, MG!

That's ok and sorry for sounded harassed this morning. I was and to be honest, I'd had enough, been out and spent money on pens (a weakness). After I read the column it felt like it was written in a set.

Well, I've always been on a tight budget, and don't have a credit card of any sort (thanks to my mum, who has a complete loathing of them, and with good reason, but that's a story for another time, I fear). I learned from a really early age how to manage with what I have, so while I may not be deadly poor, nor indeed filthy rich, I know me limits and can stick to them, no trouble ;D

Oh and I'm overworked and underpaid!

I never get in to debt but i am a sad 26 year old who still lives at home. I have a credit card but only use it for on line shopping or buying something like a pc because its easier to get your money back if the shop goes under. But they have never charged me interest because i pay it off on line straight away.

I know my husband keeps wanting to buy a new car, but I'm so tight with money, I don't like to spend unless I have to.

Daisydaze, I am the same. I just opened up another bank account which has a debit card attached to it, so if there is no money in the account, the card can't be used. I don't use that as my main account, I got it purely for internet shopping and I have to go to the branch itself to deposit money into it and because I am very lazy (which it not always a bad thing) I don't do that all that often. I have only used it once so far.

Great column and I do agree with James that the media are all doom and gloom and maybe blowing it out of all proportion! However, with all due respect to James, (and I love him to bits don't get me wrong ) its easy to say there is no credit crunch when you get 20K for one afternoons work!

I've got to grocery shop tomorrow, so I'll be tempted by the pies and puddings too. I can't seem to find the chocolate on chocolate that I really like this year. All they seem to have is the crumbly puddings. Hopefully tomorrow, they'll stock the ones I like.
I'm not sure if Telegraph is still having problems, but earlier, it took a long time before it started posting what people were sending in. If you've tried to post something and it didn't go in automatically, just give it some time. We need patience with the DT website's backlog as well as the credit crunch.

I think maybe he has the kind of intellect that is stimulated by challenge anyway so maybe he appreciates it.

Bringing this over from the Christmas thread for Stiggy. The gifts he gives apparently tend to be consumables or sometimes books.

Love FB finally posted and manage to blind myself with economics. I hope it makes a little bit of sense. As I'm here, I wanted to mention something about people not spending as much on luxury goods eg cars, expensive technology, stuff you don't generally need to live on day to day. Most money is being spent on necessities eg food, clothing, petrol. Although I have noticed if the 'luxury' is cheap enough people will buy it, like sweets for a one off car journey. I also wanted to say about inflation and that James isn't the typical basket for the Consumer Price Index which is used to calculate inflation, so his tin of Spam may not have gone up in price as much and may not be considered in a typical consumer's basket. Unlike bread, milk, pasta which are and have gone up in price. There was something else but that has flown from my brain. He is in a particularly safe job and situation so he'll be not as affected, apart from his mortgage and anything else sensitive to economic changes.
