I don't think I've ever seen an episode of TG get a 4 before on here! This episode has certainly shaken some people and disappointed quite a few.

I was just thinking that... it's one of those you either love or hate? I'll give it a second watch, but immediate impressions are that it was insubstantial

I never really gave much thought to people who go on about this is the end of TG but for some reason i have felt all season that we would gear season 14 and that would be the end of the regaler series. maybe we would get one off specials. I can not put my finger on why i feel like this though.

Is it a Thornbirds thing? I loved the Thornbirds I feel old now. I haven't seen that movie in 20 years. I was thinking, beach scene, when he finds her and the love scene shortly after.

I agree - I like the specs lots (very kind of clever sexy) and the Thornbirds reference! Wasn't it Richard Chamberlain as Bishop Ralph de Bric-a- Brac? And Rachel Ward as the temptress? (sorry gone off thread here in memories of a right potboiler!!)

I don't think I've ever seen an episode of TG get a 4 before on here! This episode has certainly shaken some people and disappointed quite a few. Yes it's was a bit odd but sometimes TG has to do this and maybe because the contents was as good it didn't make the impact it could have done.

My daughter has just finished watching it and asked if that was the last ever TG She's not the only one who was thinking that. Over on FinalGear several people were rather distressed as they got the same impression. Thankfully others pointed out that on TopGear.com there is already mention of the next series.

If I watched them all again (which I probably will,) I suspect I will quite like this one, with time. The ending was a downer (great impact) but I enjoyed it more than many of the others. Unlike many on here I wasn't that keen on epi 6 cos I felt it was so contrived. Although I did think Richard's co-driver was a complete star. Trust me to be different! Mind you if you go back to the Top Gear Winter Olympics..................now that was brilliance incarnate.

The dumb blonde does not have a clue what the Thornbirds is NOW I feel really old!!! Anyway, I loved the whole episode tonight I must admit some of the episodes this series haven't done much for me, but this one I laughed aloud and fell for Richard all over again ( not that it takes much!!) I just loved all of it.

It's hard for me to write a 'JMB review' for this one, so I'm afraid you're getting my Final Gear one with names changed to protect the innocent.
To me this episode felt enjoyable enough, good in a 'better than average way to waste an hour' way. I liked how they sneaked quite a lot of reviewing into the Scirocco segment even if the ads were in themselves a bit pointless. Jay Leno... legend, but for once I wished the SIARPC could have been a little longer. Really enjoyed the mad Australian cars too. The news was good, the Cool Wall was the Cool Wall, no problems there.
And then came the Aston Martin film.
I still can't decide whether that elevated the episode to something special or whether I need to watch it again so I don't feel like I've been hit by a runaway train before making a more considered judgement, but right now I'm thinking it might well have been the stand-out film of the series. It all seemed so damn final that even though I know work for series 14 is already underway, it felt like it was all a smokescreen and this really was the end.
Still, it's not, so phew.
But what it was was a wonderfully constructed piece of film that didn't need an awful lot saying. We already know how an Aston Martin review goes, so Jeremy didn't need to repeat the same old things all over again - which is fine, because the car was more than capable of speaking for itself. As far as I'm concerned, there is no more beautiful sound in motoring than an Aston Martin, and it's hard for me to think of a more beautiful sight. The V12 Vantage is going to split opinions - as another poster on Final Gear has already proved, not everyone is going to like it, but I think it is stunning. And the film itself felt like a requiem, not only for V12 powered Astons, but for the love of driving. Some people wanted more films about cars - well, that was probably the most evocative and true piece they could have done. This is a car built for the love of driving, and the world at large says this kind of vehicle has no place. It wasn't about the Aston itself in the end - they could have used a Ferrari or a Lambo, a Mercedes honed by AMG, a Porsche, the list goes on... it wasn't about the car tself, in the end, but what it's really for. The days of the car as a symbol of freedom are gone. The world wants us all in eco-boxes, wedged nose-to-tail with other eco-boxes. There are people who'd rather we took no pleasure from driving at all.
And really, as petrolheads, I think in years to come we'll mourn that more than the loss of Top Gear, when the end eventually comes. I think it brought it home to me in the end that much as I'll be sad when the boys are too old or broken to do it any more, when they can't come up with anything else they want to do, I'll have some great friends I've made through the show, I'll have the shows themselves to watch over again and it will have left a fantastic legacy of entertainment. What I'll never get to enjoy is the freedom of the road in the way my dad had it a generation ago, and the cars designed to make the most of that freedom. That makes me sad.

You really are a steak and kidney lock-opener, aren't you? I have never heard this saying before? Is it a saying or have they just made it up for the show?

The term that they were eluding to can be worked out if you change steak and kidney to pie and lock opener to key.

They need to learn how to pronounce "Bathurst" correctly! I'm available for lessons. Actually there's an idea. Why don't they join our "fist fight" and race at Bathurst with Ben Collins?
