Lindenchase, thank you, thank you, thank you. This is the picture I have been longing to see. James looks very fine in his academic robes, I hope he gets to keep them.

From the BBC Lancashire news page:
Top Gear presenter James May awarded honorary doctorate
Top Gear co-presenter James May has been awarded an honorary degree by Lancaster University.
The award-winning journalist was a student on the campus in the 1980s when he studied music.
Known as Captain Slow for his cautious driving style on the BBC Two show, he has become an honorary doctor of letters.
He said he was "flattered" to receive such an accolade, and felt emotional returning to his former university.
"It's very nostalgic, what with work commitments I haven't been back for 10 years.
"I walked round the campus and it was very emotional, it doesn't really come flooding back but, more like a wall covered in posters, it hit me instantly.
"It smells the same, feels the same but altered so I got slightly lost."
May graduated in 1985 and remembers a time "bathed in benign sunshine".
"But it must have rained really, it is Lancaster after all," he added.

Seeing this picture, I might be about to be boo-ed or something, but - James and the revered Doctor Brian May must be related somehow. Give James longer hair, and he and Doctor Bri could be twins, I swear it. Please don't leave that in my brain ;D in that case I'm off to buy Bri some hair dye, sadly that man does my head in (for reasons I'll not put on here, because I will get shot ;D)......

The weather here in Lancashire is absolutely filthy today. I'm glad that, from the photos, it looks as if he had a decent day yesterday.

I still think it's so cool we both got a degree in the same year.
I earned mine, but I won't count it against him. I really hope they rib Hammond about this.

Fun fact about the pic with James and the University Chancellor, pictured. Amie8 on FinalGear pointed out it's ex mountaineer Chris Bonnington, whose face adorned James' shirt in Bolivia. *is off to search for pic*

I actually checked out 'Doctor of Letters' as it's quite unusual for an honorary degree. This definition from Wikipedia makes complete sense:
Doctor of Letters (Latin: Litterarum doctor; D.Litt.; or Litt. D.) is a university academic degree.
In the United Kingdom the degree is a higher doctorate, above the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), and is issued on the basis of a long record of research and publication. The degree D.Litt. is awarded to candidates whose record of published work and research shows conspicuous ability and originality and constitutes a distinguished and sustained achievement. University committee and board approval is required, and candidates must provide documented mastery of a particular area or field. The degree may also be awarded honoris causa to such people the university in question deems worthy.

James fits all those categories in my opinion, and James is a very worthy candidate. I feel really chuffed for him. I bet he enjoyed the ceremony, I think he would like the protocol and ritual involved.

Interesting story indeed! Having not studied the Bolivia footage as closely as some here *cough* (To be honest, I was still fighting the James May attraction the last time I saw that special! I know, I know... I think it was the machete that did it, in the end... that and the glimpse of *ahem* lower stomach... I gave in soon after that, I believe!), well, I simply thought that was a Che Guevara t-shirt at the time. Silly, silly me ;D

I simply thought that was a Che Guevara t-shirt at the time. I think James wouldn't want to be found dead wearing a Che Guevra t-shirt. His heros are more of the Biggles kind.

Wonderful story and fab pictures, I am so glad that there are some people in authority who recognise his talents (unlike the recent TV awards he didn't win). Well done James, we are ALL very proud of you.
