Another bump, but I read this today and apparently the university is under threat. (University of Cumbria is the name for the relatively recent collective of colleges that includes Lancaster Uni). I can't believe this, it's always been so popular. Wonder if James, and any other influential alumni, know about this? m.dailymail.co.uk/mobile/news/article.html?articleID=1383224Students are being left in the dark over seven at-risk universities which face closure..... Three of these are believed to be the University of West London (formerly Thames Valley University), the University of Cumbria and the University of Gloucestershire.

Oh, that's awful! Hopefully something can be done. Closing any type of educational institution never benefits anyone. The things that are redundant and need to be cut to save money never are. The word "administration" comes to mind. We have a residential home for wayward teenagers in our town. It is state and federally funded. They don't make decisions based on how much money is in the budget or on terms of efficiency. They buy something or decide on a service based on the whims of the person in charge that day. They needed a part for their clothes dryer, called me to order it and asked that I have it shipped overnight...for an extra $30.00! If I ordered it with regular shipping they'd have it in two days. Since my tax dollars go to fund this place, I decided to make an executive decision and have it sent in two days. Amazingly enough no was injured or mentally scarred by having to wait that extra day! Oops! Ok, rant over.

I am sure James will be greatly saddened if his old university is axed. He seemed to have great affection for the place.

The article talks about the University of Cumbria not the University of Lancaster. Not the same thing.

I stand corrected. Ignore the above - apologies.
Edit: I'd been told, and never corrected, that Lancaster Uni was part of the University of Cumbria, as of a few years ago. Apparently it was a Lancaster College (St Martins) that was subsumed. Panic over.
