James is moonlighting again.. On April 23, James May will take over from Bruce dickinson on the Friday Night Rock Show. The Top Gear presenter intends to play a selection of classic rock songs, including the likes of AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson and Jethro Tull.
"I've never had a whole radio show to myself and I'm very much looking forward to inflicting the soundtrack of my youth on the nation," said May.
Despite dickinson due to leave the show at the end of April, the BBC said that May's appearance will be strictly for "one night only".www.digitalspy.co.uk/broadcasting/news/a215693/james-may-to-host-bbc-6-music-rock-show.html?rssEdit: Can I just point out the article actually refers to Bruce D-i-ckinson, but the automatic censor is on fire again?

They have just mentioned this on Radio 2... it would seem "Sally Traffic" has a soft spot for our James too, Richard Allison called him her toy boy ;D Very sensible lady with taste obviously

I missed the beginning of the show, because I was still on my way home from work, but I'm listening now, and it all sounds great! ;D
I'll have to catch up with the rest of it later. Thank goodness for iPlayer!

I loved the way he said he's not allowed to have rock music on in the kitchen when they're "shaving parmesan". Lovely scene of domestic tension implied there!

Mainly good stuff all this - the soundtrack of my yoof - Floyd, Bowie, Gabriel, Genesis. Not much that I didn't know but I'll download the Rush track. I will have to go to bed soon cos I'm knackered after a v tiring day.

I have no idea what song this is playing now. I hope I'm on the right station.
Edit: A quick Google revealed it to be King Crimson .. whom I don't know, but James has mentioned them before

Oh god, he's going through my youth now too. Deep Purple, Black Sabbath...The moment their track started, with the thunder and rain, I was back in a darkened room at uni. Imagine 5 or 6 denim-clad girls, 18 years old, all with waist-length hair, sitting on the floor swaying slowly to the music and truly believing that the devil might come for them. (You have to forgive us, we were all virgins and couldn't think of anything better to do)
Now he's playing "Moonchild" by King Crimson. I did an interpretive dance assessment piece to that! (Yes, I was that sad student). Oh James, what are you doing to me? Please don't play "In the Court Of The Crimson King".....

BUM! TOH set the HDD recorder to record it onto a DVD RAm while we were out and all we got was Ashes to Ashes with an error message plastered across the middle of the screen! At least we can listen to the end of it on the radio

Oops! However, it should be on iPlayer later, so you can catch up with the rest of it on there, as I intend to do.

Well, TOH is enjoying what we have heard in the last 45 mins, though it sounds like all the stuff I'd have liked better was on earlier!
I'll have to check out the i player.

Bruce D's show from last week is on iPlayer, so this one should go on as well. It should be on the BBC 6 page, too.

OMFG - Disco Boy?!?!? That's a rather obscure Zappa track, unless you're a Zappa fan, which leads me to believe I heart James even more. Dude...obscure Zappa? I'm so chuffed to bits right now..
Could anybody please tell me where to find this on Itunes and if it includes James' commentary? If it doesn't, I don't want to purchase it - I think we've got all those songs on CD but never put them together in that order.
I'm mainly interested in the commentary - but love most of the music, too. Disco Boy....I can't stop laughing! Well done, James!

Could anybody please tell me where to find this on Itunes and if it includes James' commentary? You can listen to it on BBC iPlayer. The radio edition does work outside the UK as well. Also, there is the "Listen Again" thiungy on the Rdio6 website. Someobe will probably upload it as well. I'm looking forward to an edition with all the noisy bits left out.

I LOVE the fact that Limelight by Rush is on the list. One of my absolute favorite songs. The fact that James likes Rush makes him even better (if possible) in my book!
