A free audiobook, hmmm, I wonder which one you'll pick (if you decide to give it a try), vertebraille! ;D The weirdest thing happened here the other day: I usually bring my iPod to bed, to listen to an audiobook (or, the Archers... I'm afraid I'm a bit of an addict , don't tell Jeremy) because I sometimes find it hard to just fall asleep. This time I was, of course, looking forward to not falling asleep listening to the lovely mr May.. And out of the blue mr Hops asks to listen together. He didn't think it was so funny when I blurted out that "I never thought you would want to take JM to bed..." ;D I think he might have a strong platonic liking for the man, which of course suits me perfectly.

I know what you mean Hops. MOH really likes James, in all his programs. So I don't need to hide his dvds, cds or books when they come into the house. He enjoys them almost as much as I do. Makes life so much easier! ;D ;D

I downloaded 'How to land...'it's my first audiobook. I am looking forward to listening to it at the gym tomorrow, hopefully it will be a good distraction (Stephen Fry's advice?).

I have just seen the trailer on BBC2! It looked brilliant. ;D
"Coming soon", it said, so no definite dates yet.

I saw it too, on BBC2 just before 6pm, and it does look fantastic. I wish they had been specific about a date.

That's actually a lot sooner than I expected. When the book came out I seem to remember some comment (from him) that the series was way behind the book, and I'd formed the obviously erroneous impression that it would air towards the end of the year, perhaps around Christmas (remember the timings of Toy Stories?)
Whenever it turns up I'll be waiting!

From the Radio Times website:-
James May's Man Lab
Sunday 31 October 9:00pm - 10:00pm BBC2
New series. The host tries to redeem the reputation of modern men, who he believes are perceived as being unreliable, clumsy and oafish, by teaching them skills cherished by their forefathers. His first group of students faces challenges including defusing an unexploded bomb, serenading a woman, building a kitchen out of concrete and creating a motorised picnic table.
It's the first of three episodes. Sounds really good! ;D

The other challenges, yes, but creating a motorised picnic table? When did that enter the panoply of masculine skills?

I think that, in this case, the nature of the project might be largely irrelevant. It's more likely to be about building a mechanical object, using tools and gadgets properly, and generally demonstrating a sufficient level of manly practicality. In other words, it's about the process of construction, rather than the finished machine itself. I think it sounds rather cool!

Hmmmm. This is going to give me a bit of a headache. I suspect we'll be out Sunday evening to celebrate a birthday. And although we have a DVD recorder, we hardly ever record anything! This is mainly to do with the fact that I watch very little TV and Mr Crumbs watches the geography, history and engineering channels which are repeated so often recording is unnecessary.
But obviously this is different! Trouble is, Mr Crumbs has, I think, taken a disgruntled dislike of James on the basis of sheer unadulterated envy. Nothing to do with me you understand, no, much more to do with the fact James has managed to do most things Mr Crumbs would love to do - fly in a Tornado, Spitfire and a U2 being top of the list, followed by driving beautiful fast cars and being loaded for doing a job that most people would pay to do. He still, I think, knows not of my pre-deliction.
If I state an interest in recording Man Lab (and James is virtually the only person recorded in this house anyway - I'm amazed he hasn't cottoned on) Mr Crumbs will scoff - particularly when he reads what it's about. He considers himself most manly (and in fact he is, except he can't play the piano sadly but that's me being churlish) and that it's a bit insulting to modern man. I suspect he will be interested in the airbus emergency landing episode, but that's it.
Oh bugger and wo is me. How can I get round this without giving the game away? Please understand if Mr Crumbs knows, James would become No 1 in Mr Crumbs hate list and I would be scrutinised whenever he came on the telly!

Would you be able to watch it on iPlayer? If they have any sense, the BBC will put it on there pretty soon after the initial broadcast.

Yay... looking forward to it Oh, crumbs, that's difficult.. You don't want mr Crumbs envying James even more than he does now I suppose.

I can sympathize with you Crumbs. MOH took to Top Gear and to James quite easily... at first. When he suspected that I liked James, he started rolling his eyes every time I would watch Top Gear or one of James' programs. Then he boycotted Top Gear altogether. I didn't really understand it at first, then one of the ladies on the board mentioned that he might be suffering from a bruised ego. I hadn't even given that possibility a thought! Then, all of a sudden, he started watching Top Gear again and even had a Drink To Britain Marathon one weekend. I'm guessing he either thought he was wrong about my lust preference for James or is just dealing with it. MOH does know that I like James more than the Jeremy and Richard. This is fine because he does too. Only, I'm sure not for the same reasons. ;D I still don't think he realizes the depth of my preference, and I'm happy to keep it that way. Insecurities and bruised egos aside, I hope you can watch the series and that Mr. Crumbs can watch and enjoy it too.
