This is a really interesting discussion to me. I obviously can't speak for all Americans and their academic backgrounds, but we didn't delve very deeply into the history of English kings. We touched on them as appropriate in European history and read as much Shakespeare as you could stuff into the curriculum but without taking a university level class specifically in the English royal lineage, you don't hear all these stories. Hmm, there's something to do in my spare time. QI.

Richard of York, but also King of England. So why no support for burying him at Westminster Abbey along with many of his ancestors and descendants? I think there's plenty of support for him being buried in Westminster Abbey, but I suspect that the voices asking for York to be considered may have been in opposition to Leicester. Nothing against the place and all that, but if Westminster Abbey's a non-starter for any reason, then the theory is that it should be York rather than Leicester.

There doesn't seem to be much support for burying Richard in Westminster Abbey, partly because of his defeat, partly because he's still seen as 'a bit dodgy' and mainly because there's not really room. The Abbey might be able to squeeze the bones in if they tried, but the people responsible for the Abbey did say last week that there isn't space for the kind of memorial that would probably be appropriate.
As for burying him in York, it makes sense to me, but the Church doesn't seem to want to bury him there. And to be fair, unless there are compelling reasons to do otherwise, normal procedure with exhumed remains that aren't subject to a criminal investigation is to reinter them as close to the original burial site as is practical.
Of course, there's also the matter of what form of service the burial should take. Obviously, Richard's reign was pre-reformation, so he would have been Catholic. A Requiem mass wouldn't go down well in some of the more significant Anglican churches, but as a monarch, it's appropriate for him to be buried within the Established church.
I'm glad I don't have to sort it all out - and thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster none of this malarkey will ever apply to me!

My computer is being very slow so I can't verify what I'm about to say. Wasn't Richard III supposedly responsible for the deaths of the 2 princes. I know it has never been proven. I think I'm in the right time period on this.

I think I'm in the right time period on this. Allegedly, yes. As you say, it has never been proven, but it's equally difficult to disprove. The thing is, as awful as it sounds, it would not have been a particularly unusual course of action for someone to take to secure the throne at that point in history, but we get most of our image of Richard from Shakespeare's play - which was written to please a Tudor monarch. Richard was defeated by Henry Tudor, who became Henry VII, but history will go on to record that the Tudors were not exactly averse to a bit of head removal to further their own ends either (Henry VIII is said to have put around 70,000 people to death, including two of his own wives and a number of his close friends and advisors, and Elizabeth I famously had her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots executed - and Elizabeth herself was lucky to escape execution by her half-sister Mary Tudor, who was known as 'Bloody Mary'). If you'll excuse the expression, it's all relative...

All this shenanigans about a long dead King is so very British. Weeell, not Scottish cos they had their own monarch at the time. Interesting there was a mention of Josephine Tey's book. It was recommended to me a while ago and I had forgotten, so I will buy that one.
Anyway, not that I care a great deal, but I would favour Leicester - lets face it, there's not many other reasons to go there and York has lots of lovely stuff to visit. Sorry Leicester residents! I admit, I have a personal reason too - I went to University there.....and guess what I studied......

My favorite history is English History. I guess it's because we don't have a true monarchy here.

I also think somebody replied that it linked to a dodgy porn site, not that there are many non-dodgy ones. I didn't try it, fortunately, as I saw some of the replies first

He's so close to perfect*, it's almost scary at times. I'm probably lucky I'd already found the man who's perfect for me before I discovered James. Because, let's face it, he's set the standard pretty high when it comes to intelligence, humour, knowledge, playfullness and practicality, hasn't he?
*In a non-mainstream, special-interest sort of way, that is.

It means they've been together since 2001 when it was 'Y' registration, good condition speaks for itself. So Sarah is a Y Reg girlfriend.

Such a good picture - taken a couple of days ago while travelling to Longyearbyen, the northernmost town in the world. The documentary on the WWII Arctic Convoys is going to be fascinating, and I love how protective Jeremy is of his subject when people make stupid-arse comments about it. It's well timed too, as they've only just awarded the first Arctic Convoy veterans medals THIS MONTH, which I am sure makes Jeremy very happy too.
