There are plenty of comments around the JMB about James' clothes. Recently this outfit caused some consternation in the Naughty Corner....... ....but having read this little article from BBC America, I thought we might benefit from a separate thread dedicated to James' sense of style in general. Because he does have a sense of style. It's just that it's unique to him. (Ducks bullets, crawls towards door) Any pics showing specific outfits worthy of mention will be very much appreciated! www.bbcamerica.com/anglophenia/2011/12/how-to-dress-like-james-may/

Great article, Dit, and an even greater idea for a thread. James has given us many choices and we love him for it! I submit the following even though I know there are many on this forum who love it. I believe this sweater is perfect - for my grandma.

Right were to start.
Good A suit Fullers ad clothes (velvet jacket, jeans) (Green jacket, grey sweater, jeans) pale blue zipped sweater Belstaf jacket,(he gets away with the flowery shirt),jeans Leather jacket (at High Voltage) Disposable thong(just because)
With that said he should only ever pick two items out of his wardrobe at a time. Its when he goes for a third it all goes wrong. God love him.

OMG, what was he thinking here? There's the grandmother's curtains shirt, which wouldn't be too bad with the jacket (as long as the jacket was zipped and completely blocking any view of the shirt), but you can also see the jacket's plaid lining. And accessorizing with the bright red briefcase or laptop or whatever that is? *orders out for brain bleach*

I think he hankers back to the 70's childhood. I quite like the majority of his clothes, then again we are similar ages.

The briefcase was a gift to every guest, so that one's not his fault!

OK, that makes me feel a little better. I actually do like most of his clothes, including the stripey jumpers and leather jackets and flowery shirts, but sometimes I cringe. Of course, I can always imagine him without that shirt.

Do I spy the shirt from the sharks episode? He should be allowed to wear that shirt whenever, wherever, however he wants.

Well, actually it wasn't either article of clothing that caught my eye. But we're discussing clothing in this thread, right?

But we're discussing clothing in this thread, right? *blushes furiously* Fizzy, the only reason I forgive James for that fugly shirt is his gratuitous walk on the beach in the Shark Special. Otherwise, I'd hate it, too. Part of me thinks he doesn't own that shirt; maybe the director had him wear it to look more.. Hawaiian-y? Bring out your eye bleach, folks... Speaking of curtains... "Someday son, this will all be yours..." "What, the curtains?" Well, sort of... And it doesn't matter what your body type is, paisley is very hard to pull off. James pulled it together and toned it down with the black jacket, but still...my poor eyes....ugh.. I think my dad had a shirt similar to this when my parents got married in the mid 1970's. You're getting better. Keep going. Very good James. This is how you work a bright shirt with a neutral. You get a cookie.

I also like most of his clothes, but sometimes it's just the combination that's a little tricky. In this case I actually like the shirt, and I like him in a smart jacket. It's just that this Hawaiian shirt doesn't look quite right under that rather formal jacket, is all. Sorry, James, not a criticism, just an observation (and only a personal opinion!).

(Unless of course it is lying on my bedroom floor. )

The "Please mum stop making me shirts from the curtains" I'd love to know if there is anyone on the board who actually likes this shirt or if we are all relatively unanimous in thinking it needs to be burned at New Years (or sooner, if possible). Anyone in favor of James wearing aforementioned tablecloth? Please make a case for it. It needs a lawyer, and badly.

In it's favour, it does match the couch rather nicely. Yes... make it into cushions.

The Curtain Shirt is horrid, but James does manage to improve it (now that's what I call talent). Still, it doesn't rank very highly in my books, not in comparison with a lot of the others anyway. I've looked through the piccies I have in the hope I could post something worthwhile, but all I can do is come to one conclusion: he has a bloody big wardrobe for a bloke. ;D Edit: I'd like to know what's happened to this one. (I'm guessing this is a jumper that is either loved or loathed. Personally, I find it to be "strangely attractive". )

Agreed, he has plenty of stuff - I don't believe for a moment that the small rack he showed on Man Lab contained all his shirts - but you do have to say that he's loyal. How many years has he been wearing this jumper? And this? And most especially, this? I picked up this quote the other day, though I can't remember where from. It does seem apposite, though. The James May Law of Conservation of Clothing: if it's intact enough to not literally fall off your body it's good enough to wear on camera.

I mean, come on...those glasses with that shirt with those jeans with those shoes with that bike? Is there a colour on the spectrum that isn't represented? ;D (Ok, I'm probably being mean...I am laughing with him rather than at him, I'll have you know. ;D) Does anyone else dislike this shirt, by the way? I don't think it does anything for him. It's a bit bland. The James May Law of Conservation of Clothing: if it's intact enough to not literally fall off your body it's good enough to wear on camera. That is so brilliant and so true. ;D
