You know he's got enough money to buy Savile Row suits but chooses to wear sixties style shirts and I'm saying that because of the flowers. Flower power hasn't hurt him! Would you be embarrassed to be seen with him? Dit, You put a word in your recent post that most Americans don't even know. I used the word somnolent to someone and they asked me what it meant. All you educators have you noticed a decline in your vocabulary if you don't use it, because after only 5 months out of the system I can barely remember anything!

I mean, come on...those glasses with that shirt with those jeans with those shoes with that bike? Is there a colour on the spectrum that isn't represented? ;D Does anyone else dislike this shirt, by the way? I don't think it does anything for him. It's a bit bland. I don't mind the shirt, but those jeans are awful. Are they the ones the rabbit chewed up? But no, I wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen with him, regardless of what he's wearing. ;D

If I was his friend or other (wishful thinking) I'd have to give him a bit of guideance on the wardrobe front occasionaly.I like the ripped jeans and even the shirt just bin the coloured glasses. He is so cute but would have to have a clean out once a year. This is very yum. Attachments:

I love the sunglasses - a nice, eccentric touch. Hate those bloody shoes with a passion, though, and the fact that he ALWAYS wears socks even in 100 degrees of heat. A very British cliche, that. Yes, he looks most of the time like an explosion in a Vymura warehouse - but would we want him any other way?

I grew up in Asia and always wore socks with my sneakers. I still do and my friends think I'm nuts. They have birkenstocks.

I love the sunglasses too, although I'd like them better with a T-shirt. 'dI buy some for myself if I knew where to get them.

All you educators have you noticed a decline in your vocabulary if you don't use it, because after only 5 months out of the system I can barely remember anything! I've always been happy to use my vocabulary, though I try to suit it to the occasion, if you see what I mean. When I was teaching, if I used a complex word, I would then follow it up with a more straightforward synonym, thinking that it gave a chance for kids to pick up new words. I'm really quite fussy about words, I like them to manipulate them and make them work precisely. Too many years in education, I suppose!

The "Please mum stop making me shirts from the curtains" I'd love to know if there is anyone on the board who actually likes this shirt or if we are all relatively unanimous in thinking it needs to be burned at New Years (or sooner, if possible). Anyone in favor of James wearing aforementioned tablecloth? Please make a case for it. It needs a lawyer, and badly. I love the curtain shirt on James because it reminds me of a garden, which reminds me of his Man Lab Bog Garden and James inviting us to "come into my garden." I get a warm feeling in my belly whenever I hear it. And this, in turn, reminds me of him quoting Thomas Campion, (1567 to 1620): "There is a garden in her face where roses and white lillies blow." Anything that brings to mind the dulcet tones of James reciting poetry is a good thing. Another nice garden

I get a warm feeling in my belly whenever I hear it. Thank you cockney. I was hoping someone would stick up for the poor little shirt. Now I'll think of it as his garden shirt (he already has a garden, might as well have a colorful shirt to match)... and then wonder how it would look as a pillow sham on the couch without him noticing it's absence. Must somehow plot its inevitable demise for 2012... ;D ;D Agreed, he has plenty of stuff - I don't believe for a moment that the small rack he showed on Man Lab contained all his shirts - but you do have to say that he's loyal. How many years has he been wearing this jumper? And ditto to that, Dit. I don't think that rack in Man Lab has all his shirts, either. I think those are the shirts he wears most often out of his extensive collection (except for that really ugly orange one I don't recognize and have never seen before). It's like that rack is a representation for everything else in his closet. But oh, that purple striped jumper...there's my cue for fainting couch... I am way too fond of that jumper... I don't mind the shirt, but those jeans are awful. Are they the ones the rabbit chewed up? But no, I wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen with him, regardless of what he's wearing. ;D I agree Fizzy, if he's going to wear a shirt that is of that nice quality, at least wear some nice jeans with them, not ones with holes in them. He certainly has enough jeans to go around. Maybe they got ripped just before the picture was taken? Maybe the Rabbit of Caerbannog called his friends over to attack his jeans.. But you gotta admire a guy who really wears his clothes out. That kind of loyalty is admirable. He's spent a lot of money on them; he might as well wear them until he can't anymore. ;D Ripped jeans are fine if you wear them with the right thing (like a t-shirt or something equally as informal), although the sunglasses made me giggle. It pulls the whole eccentric side of him together. If he doesn't have an issue wearing them out in public, I wouldn't either. I'd ask him about it beforehand, but if he was adamant, then he can go ahead and do it. As long as he is ok and comfortable with it, I'd be fine too.

Love or hate the individual clothing items, I just adore the fact that he's not "styled". I'd be seen with him wearing anything at all, as he clearly dresses to please himself, and that's fine by me. (And I quite like the above "microphone" shirt as it appears to fit him very nicely.)

Anything that brings to mind the dulcet tones of James reciting poetry is a good thing. That argument for James' sensorially offensive, ill fitting print shirts has almost swayed me. What a lovely image you've put in my head. So romantic. Maybe I'll try to give the shirts a chance. Maybe.

I'm thinking that the 'microphone' shirt is probably rather expensive, because of the way the pattern matches up over the front. With a pattern as....expansively florid as that, it would be rather tricky to match up.

It's not that hard matching a pattern,it's just the same as matching wall paper.

Yes, but if a garment's going to be cheap, you don't bother matching up precisely because that would mean throwing a lot of material away. With something that's going to be more expensive that's not a consideration. I think?

Here is a link (if it works) on how to match patterns www.ehow.com/how_8094531_measure-material-pattern-match.htmlI used to make flowered/striped/plaid oxford type shirts for M&S and believe me NO fabric is ever wasted,it would cut in to the profit margins to much.If the shirt is expensive or not you never waste fabric.

James obviously feels fine in his own skin. Actually I think all three of them do. It's so not about their clothes except they each have a type. James the more hippie, Jeremy jeans and Richard makes sure it fits. I think that's the problem nowadays, so many people dress for others and not for themselves. I pretty much dress for comfort, lots of jeans except at work.

Some of my favorite stripey jumpers on him don't seem to be sometimes.

It's not that hard matching a pattern,it's just the same as matching wall paper. I might have known you would know how to do that! I've read the instructions and I would say that it sounds very hard - I wouldn't want to attempt it, for fear of ruining the material before I'd even started!

That's class. He certainly likes his M&S Blue Harbour range! I love the flowery shirts. "Grandad Shirts" as they were formerly known. But gone are the days you could pop to your 2nd hand store and pick them up for next to nothing. They cost a friggin' fortune now. I like this one... he looks like a disgruntled science teacher Attachments:

(I wasn't sure where to put this, but it seems to fit here.)
This is from Jeremy's column today, commenting on the cachet of brand names. "I have a friend who dresses in quite the most hideous clothes you have ever seen. They look like they have been made either as a joke or by someone who was being deliberately stupid. But when I explain this to him, he always points to the label and says, with a hurt tremor in his voice: 'But it’s Dolce & Gabbana.' ”
Could he be referring to someone we know and love? In one of his previous columns, he said that he's bought a lot of designer clothes but always manages to make them look like "rubbish."

Dit, this is off topic and late as well, but I would really love to see you start a thread for the New Year where you submit a Word of the Day (or thereabouts) for the rest of us so that we could then respond by using it in our replies. It could even be made fun by keeping it in the NC - sort of a Word of the Corner thing. You know . . . to expand our, uh, minds.

No truer words have been spoken, Antonia. Thank you. To echo your statement, it is possible to get a bright or colorful shirt that can work with other things and doesn't have to look like you just came from a garage sale. It is possible, and I have seen James do it. The label shouldn't be a limiting factor when he buys something. It can be something he can keep in mind, but if there is something that is very well made that is from a not very well known designer, he shouldn't decide he doesn't want to buy it simply b/c it isn't Jones of New York or whatever. Brand doesn't always dictate quality; lesser known designers can and do make very nice quality things for not as much money. He should get it b/c it is tailored to him, he likes it and it is made well, not solely because it is D&G. If it happens to be a well know brand and all of those other criteria have been met, then so much the better. Brand shouldn't be the only thing he looks for; I think he'd be cheating himself if he only focuses on one brand of something. But if he is comfortable and happy wearing curtain shirts, then by all means he should; it's his dime. He just shouldn't expect everyone to love it as enthusiastically as he does: we have to look at it (and ahem, make it our desktop wallpaper), after all. He can get a colorful shirt that is expressive and doesn't blind everyone in a 10 mile radius. I'll get off my soapbox now...
