NT News hunt for Top Gear crew, fail miserablyBY COURTNEY TODD NT NEWS OCTOBER 22, 2014 11:21AMThe BMW and Bentley in the Adelaide River Inn carpark. Photo by Emily WorrallWHILE eyes all over the Top End were on the lookout for the Top Gear blokes, it was an Englishwoman who managed to get close to the gentlemen hoons on Tuesday. Emily Worrall, originally from Manchester, was working at the Adelaide River BP Service Station when the Top Gear entourage pulled into the car park. The controversial Jeremy Clarkson was at the wheel of a dusty, black BMW M6, James May was driving a dark blue Nissan GTR and Richard Hammond was cruising in an eye-catching yellow Bentley Continental. “James got out of his car to talk to someone and Jeremy and Richard stayed in their cars,” Ms Worrall said. “Then James and Jeremy spoke for a bit while the camera crew were fuelling up.” The young service station attendant asked if she could take some photos of the car and she was given the green light. “Once the crew’s cars were fuelled up, they headed straight off,” she said. The NT News spent Tuesday trying to track down the elusive Top Gear convoy. An initial tip-off placed the three cars, crew and Traffic Werx girls turning off the Stuart Highway and heading towards Batchelor. The publican at Rum Jungle Tavern said he’d seen hide nor hair of the three car loving Brits, though he had heard they were somewhere near the train tracks close to the Batchelor turn-off. James May talks to Jeremy Clarkson, driving a BMW, while Richard Hammond, in a Bentley looks on at Adelaide River Inn. Photo by Emily WorrallThe NT News scoured the highway and a few back roads but couldn’t spot the bright yellow Bentley. At Adelaide River Inn, the staff hadn’t seen or heard anything by 2pm. Barman Tom Joyce said he’d like the three fellas to stop for a beer. “Clarkson, he’s a funny bloke,” the English backpacker said. The NT News Top Gear hunting wagon cruised the highway a few more times before running into Al (Bronco) Underwood and Wayne (Bullethead) Cottle from the Patriots Motorcycle Club at Adelaide River Inn. The pair had been riding up from Three Ways but hadn’t spotted the Top Gear entourage. “I’d like to get a photo with the three of them and my bike,” Mr Cottle said. After bidding the Patriots boys adieu, the NT News got another tip that the Top Gear cars were racing at the Batchelor airstrip. But as the trusty NT News car was halfway to Batchelor, Clarkson, Hammond and May shot out of Coach Road at Adelaide River, quickly fuelled up and disappeared behind a roadblock on Dorat Road. The NT News stopped to shoot the breeze with some locals stuck at the roadblock. “I’m not impressed,” Daly River resident Brian Muir said. “There’s been no warning or anything and the woman (manning the roadblock) can’t tell us anything except the road will be closed for an hour and a half.” The NT News stuck around for a bit hoping for some proof the Top Gear cars were behind the roadblock. But not even the roar of the engines or the whinge of the Englishman could be heard. In the end, the NT News had to admit defeat for the day - but our sources tell us the Top Gear gents will be filming at the Pine Creek open pit mine on Wednesday. The lap may be lost but the race isn’t over yet, boys. www.ntnews.com.au/entertainment/nt-news-hunt-for-top-gear-crew-fail-miserably/story-fnk0b1gl-1227098430596

Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama and the royal couple Kate and Will were easier to access than Top Gear stars on their Northern Territory visitsBY MEGAN PALIN AND FRED MCCUE NT NEWS OCTOBER 23, 2014 8:13AMShae Leaver posted this photo of herself and workmates at Pine Creek Railway Resort with the cast from UK's Top Gear. PHOTO: FacebookAs the Argentine Ambassador to the UK demanded an apology from the BBC Top Gear team for alleged national insults, Jeremy Clarkson and his co-stars James May and Richard Hammond were happily filming somewhere near Pine Creek, 200km south of Darwin.Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama and the royal couple Kate and Will were easier to access during their Territory visits than the Top Gear stars. The NT News traced the Top Gear team to the Frances Creek iron ore mine 30km from Pine Creek on Wednesday, but was ushered off site. Security vehicles, a mine ambulance and road trains patrolled the area throughout the day, stopping anyone from coming within 10km. Businesses and workers in the area who had come into contact with the Top Gear team were reportedly asked to sign confidentiality agreements preventing them from commenting on the film crew. Staff at the Pine Creek Hotel, where the Top Gear crew spent the evening, confirmed they had signed confidentiality agreements but refused to provide further information. But Pussy Cat Flats Race Club manager Sharon – who did not provide her last name – said the BBC had asked to use the club’s race track on Wednesday. Top Gear travelling down Second St in Katherine on their way to the gorge. PHOTO: Mark HaddowTop Gear then headed to Katherine, where they were sighted heading through town and then out along Gorge Road, where they were directed to a dirt access track leading into the national park. The convoy of support vehicles for the three stars also included a fire truck. Maybe they are planning a stunt where something is “accidentally” set on fire - a staple of their road trips. Clarkson, May and Hammond are using a yellow Bentley Continental GT, a BMW M6 and a Nissan GTR during their NT filming. They also have a slightly more down-market vehicle in the form of a Holden Maloo ute, which could be in for some tough treatment. While in the Katherine region it is believed the Top Gear team will take their upmarket cars off-road to use them in a way their designers never intended. www.ntnews.com.au/entertainment/oprah-winfrey-barack-obama-and-the-royal-couple-kate-and-will-were-easier-to-access-than-top-gear-stars-on-their-northern-territory-visits/story-fnk0b1gl-1227099440477?sv=9dd91f293a008847c06d54084fa52613

Top Gear spied filming in Australia: Clarkson, May, Hammond spotted in NTThe UK cast of BBC’s Top Gear has been sprung filming in Australia’s top end. October 23, 2014 Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond were seen driving a bright yellow Bentley Continental GT, a dark grey BMW M6 and a blue Nissan GT-R both on-road near Darwin and at an airstrip in Batchelor in the Northern Territory. Interestingly, aside from all being twin-turbocharged and very fast, the three sports cars don’t really have much in common. Published on Oct 21, 2014 snuck into an airstrip blagged my way past security had a sneak peek at them filming Top Gear . the Nissan GTR crapped its pants pretty much at every launchThe British trio from the hit motoring television program are best known for their epic road trips that often see them winding up in some sort of trouble. With the recent derestriction of speed limits along parts of the Stuart Highway, the only trouble they’re likely to get into this time around is from stray wildlife. Yesterday, Facebook user Wesley Gottliebsen videod a drag race between the Bentley and the BMW. Gottliebsen told Behind the Wheel’s Paul Maric that the Nissan was having some trouble participating in the drag race — potentially due to the weather. He also said the crew were staying at a hotel near Katherine and that he had heard their plan was to head to the derestricted sections of the Stuart Highway to film a stunt overtaking multiple road trains. Emily Worrall, a 25-year-old backpacker and Adelaide River service station attendent, also spotted the Top Gear presenters when they stopped for fuel, snapping some great pictures of the television hosts before they set off for the Pine Creek open pit mine. When asked about the experience, Worrall told Behind the Wheel, “One of the guys who was in charge or whatever asked if we could just stand back but take as many pictures as we like but just respect them and stand back.” “[James] May was the only one who got out of his car and that was to speak to [Jeremy] Clarkson who stayed sat in his car, as did [Richard] Hammond and they were literally there for five minutes whilst the camera crew filled up their cars in the [service station] that I work in.” Originally from Manchester in England, Worrall revealed she is a huge fan of Top Gear, saying, “It was a strange feeling thinking that I’ve travelled from England to Australia to just happen to bump into them in a little town like Adelaide River.” “Never in a million years would I have thought it would have happened. Made my trip for sure!” If you’ve spotted the Top Gear crew out and about, send your pictures in to us! Images by Emily Worrall. Top Gear busted in the Top EndOctober 23, 2014 - 6:39PM Dom Tripolone British TV hosts caught testing sportscars in Northern Territory.
James May and Jeremy Clarkson in Katherine. Photo: Emily Worrall The controversial hosts from the BBC's Top Gear have been spied filming in the Northern Territory this week. Outspoken host Jeremy Clarkson and his sidekicks James May and Richard Hammond have been spotted in the town of Katherine sporting some unusual rides for that part of the world. In photos that have surfaced on Twitter, the trio have been seen driving a high-performance $180,000 Nissan GT-R, $400,000 V8 Bentley Continental GT and $300,000 BMW M6 Gran Coupe - a far cry from the usual heavy-duty 4WDs normally seen in the outback. Emily Worrall@EmilyEWorrall Never seen such beautiful cars #TopGear #NT Adelaide River, Northern Territory James May, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond 22 Oct 2014 Top Gear hosts have been spied in the Northern Territory. Photo: Emily WorrallWhile Top Gear representatives were unavailable for comment, and none of the hosts have officially confirmed their presence on personal social media channels, it is believed they are filming a segment for the upcoming series using the Northern Territory's recently derestricted section of Stuart Highway between Alice Springs and Barrow Creek. The cars used are registered in Australia - and understood to have been supplied by BMW, Nissan and Bentley - and do not wear any controversial licence plates similar to those used in Argentina earlier this month that forced the trio to flee the country. While the hosts have been to Australia previously for the Top Gear festival, it is understood this is the first time they have filmed a segment here. Their arrival also comes just a week after Clarkson admitted that he lost the first points on his licence for speeding in 30 years. Drive recently went to the Northern Territory to sample the open speed limits and spoke to some drivers that had hit speeds up to 250km/h. In August the Northern Territory government extended the open speed limits trial after a successful few months where no serious incidents had occurred on the stretch of highway since speed limits were removed. www.drive.com.au/motor-news/top-gear-busted-in-the-top-end-20141023-11ara9.html

Top Gear film crew happily hogging the road as they film Northern Territory episodesBY FRED MCCUE NT NEWS OCTOBER 24, 2014The Top Gear (UK) crew are happily hogging the road as they film episodes in the Northern TerritoryTOP Gear’s Northern Territory adventure hasn’t been well received by some motorists, who were held up for 45 minutes yesterday to allow for filming on a busy road. Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond put their high-powered vehicles to the test along the Victoria Highway after spending the night at the upmarket Cicada Lodge at Katherine Gorge. A section of the highway was closed to allow filming to proceed. One driver was stranded on the highway for 45 minutes after having to wait for the BBC crew to wrap up their filming. The driver, who did not wish to be named, said she was about 30km(19mi) out of Katherine. “Then I was escorted down the highway by one of traffic control cars to find Top Gear filming and getting ready to race that strip of the highway,” she said. “They had a chopper in the air keeping cattle away from highway.” The Transport Department said no further Top Gear-related delays were expected on the Victoria Highway. Department chief executive Clare Gardiner-Barnes said a traffic management plan had been approved on the Victoria Highway for 30 minutes yesterday. She said any alleged breaches of the Traffic Management Plan would be raised with traffic control firm Trafficwerx. Ms Gardiner-Barnes said once a traffic management plan was in place the NT Traffic Act no longer applied meaning vehicles could travel at speeds above 130km/h(81mph). Another Katherine local, who wishes to remain anonymous, spotted the Top Gear team heading out of town along the Gorge Rd late on Wednesday. With his two children in the car he decided to follow the Top Gear team. “I thought I’d give the kids a buzz,” he said. He found himself behind the cars being driven by Clarkson, May and Hammond on a 100km/h(62mph) section of the road on the way to the Katherine Gorge. “Then a Land Cruiser passed me and cut in front slowing to about 60km/h.” He said this was done deliberately to allow the three vehicles being driven by the show’s stars to get away from him. “As I got to the Gorge four to five support vehicles hammered past me crossing over the double white line.” www.ntnews.com.au/entertainment/top-gear-film-crew-happily-hogging-the-road-as-they-film-northern-territory-episodes/story-fnk0b1gl-1227101059015

BBC’s Top Gear finish filming “one of their best” shows in the Northern Territory
By MEGAN PALIN NT News October 28, 2014 UK TV program Top Gear has been filming in the top end of the Northern Territory. The star cars - a yellow Bentley Continental, Nissan GTR and BMW M6 grand coupe - drive along Marrakai Road near Lake Bennett. Picture: ELISE DERWIN THE cast and crew of BBC’s hit car show Top Gear wrapped up almost two weeks of filming on various Territory roads on Monday.
The three cars pull up to refuel during the last day of filming. Picture: ELISE DERWIN The stars of the show; Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May kept a low profile during their time in the Top End, going to great lengths to evade media and members of the public. The presenters were nowhere to be seen on location for the final day of filming as a series of “pick up shots” were captured using unknown drivers in three luxury cars and a helicopter on Marrakai Rd, near Lake Bennett.
Top Gear director Kit Lynch-Robinson said the team had tried to keep filming private in an effort to not blow the surprise.
“It’s like knowing a magic trick, if you know what’s going to happen, spoilers ruin TV shows,” he said.
Mr Lynch-Robinson said the episode shot in the NT — expected to be aired in the UK followed by the rest of the world next year — will be “one of (their) best”. “It’s got some truly epic things in it,” he said.
This could be the first time Marrakai Road has ever seen a Bentley. Picture: ELISE DERWINMr Lynch-Robinson would not confirm if Clarkson, Hammond and May were still in the NT but said the stars had “enjoyed” their time in the Territory. Jeremy Clarkson tweeted his appreciation several times.
“On the whole trails of the Argentina thing it’s been lovely for them to be welcomed and have the opposite of (what happened in) Argentina,” he said.
Assistant producer Nick Dalton on set, possibly arranging a barra fishing trip or a meeting with friends for a counter meal at the Humpty Doo Tavern. Picture: ELISE DERWIN
Mr Lynch-Robinson said he would not comment on the incident which saw the Top Gear crew slammed for driving a car with an alleged offensive numberplate in Argentina other than to say “it was a coincidence”. Top Gear Star Jeremy Clarkson Loses Stealth Race to the NT NewsMEGAN PALIN NT NEWS OCTOBER 29, 2014 Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson looked extremely happy to see The NT News as he was leaving Darwin. Picture: ELISE DERWINTOP Gear star Jeremy Clarkson tried to shun the spotlight and outrun the public while filming in the Top End but the NT News finally caught up with the British host at Darwin Airport on Wednesday. The cast and crew of Top Gear went to extraordinary lengths to evade media as they filmed scenes for the show on various Territory roads over the last fortnight. The show boasts about 350 million viewers worldwide each week. “You actually found us,” a surprised Clarkson told the NT News. One of the cars featured in the Territory Top Gear episode, a yellow Bentley Continental, drives along the dusty Marrakai Road south of Darwin. Picture: ELISE DERWINClarkson has been laying low since taking part in an infamous alleged stunt in Argentina last month where he was later branded a “serial provocateur” and “an embarrassment to British people” by Argentine Ambassador Alicia Castro. The Top Gear host came under fire for driving through the country with the numberplate ‘H982 FLK’, which Castro alleged was chosen to taunt the South American country over the 1982 Falklands War. Clarkson said his time in the Territory “was extremely good ... (because) nobody threw stones at us”. “We had three nights in Darwin ... (But) we have done nothing but the Outback,” Clarkson said. Clarkson said he had stayed on an extra day after filming in the Territory as part of a “holiday with (his teenage) daughter”. He went on a tour of with Outback Floatplane Adventures where he was hosted by owner and Outback Wrangler star Matt Wright on Tuesday. Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson with Outback Wrangler star Matt Wright. Picture: Outback Floatplane AdventuresClarkson said the trip to the NT was “extremely enjoyable”. Picture: Outback Floatplane Adventures“We went on an air boat and a fly around on the helicopter,” Wright said. “(Clarkson) just said he was blown away and that he’d never seen anything like it. “He loved it.” Clarkson later Tweeted a photo a 5m saltw*ter crocodile named Tripod to his 3.98 million Twitter followers. Top Gear Filming in B.C. Excites Fans of Popular Auto
By Steve Mertl | Daily Brew Top Gear, the hugely popular BBC programme that’s nominally about cars, is filming a segment in British Columbia for its upcoming season, which has Canadian fans all atwitter. We say nominally because while the show, entering its 22nd season, features automotive rides ranging from the plebian to the exotic, it’s really about three overgrown British schoolboys with the biggest allowance … in the world. The series, co-hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, is shooting a segment featuring the Hennessy VelociRaptor, a giant luxury SUV (starting price about $150,000 USD, £95801 GBP) produced by Texas custom builder John Hennessy based on the Ford F150 Raptor crew-cab pickup truck. Details of the shoot are sketchy, even secretive. Top Gear fan forums have reported some filming was done in and around Vancouver, as well the resort town of Whistler, north of the city. Okanagan Film Commissioner Jon Summerland told Yahoo Canada News they’re also shooting in the South Okanagan and the Kootenay region near the end of November, a combination of highway and off-road scenes. But he’s mum on the exact locations. “I’ve been told to pretty much stop talking, to be honest with you,” Summerland said in an interview Friday. “They are getting a bit concerned that there’s going to be a crazy amount of people there.” Summerland, a former location manager in Vancouver’s film and TV production sector, said he was vaguely aware of the show before becoming involved, but its popularity came as a big surprise. A news release on the commission’s Facebook page drew more hits than for when George Clooney and Anthony Hopkins were filming in the area. “There’s 30,000-40,000 hits on my Facebook,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine how many people are going to show up if we say the exact locations and when they’re going to shoot.” Top Gear’s per-episode global viewership is often reported at 350 million but BBC spokeswoman Tara Davies said that number is unreliable because of the different rating systems used in various markets. However, Top Gear is sold in 214 territories, apparently a Guinness world record, she said. Davies would not provide details of the shoot, other than to say all three hosts would be involved in the segment. Inquiries to John Hennessy, who’s supplying the vehicle, were also politely turned aside. Speculation abounds over filming location The silence of the involved parties hasn’t stopped a flurry of speculation by Top Gear’s fan base, starting when the show’s hosts started dropping hints on Twitter a few weeks ago they were coming to the Canadian West Coast. Then this week, Hammond tweeted a photo of an event notice in a Vancouver-area hotel on Tuesday. Richard Hammond @richardhammond ·18 Nov 2014 Oh no. Can't decide which to attend as key note speaker. /photo/1 That was followed by a Twitter exchange between Clarkson and May indicating they were headed there. Not very wintery in Hammersmith. I think I'll go somewhere snowy today. You up for that twitter.com/JeremyClarkson">@jeremyclarkson? — James May (@mrjamesmay)">November 20, 2014 Right. I've definitely decided. I am going to Vancouver. twitter.com/MrJamesMay">@mrjamesmay — Jeremy Clarkson (@jeremyclarkson)">November 20, 2014 Sure enough, fans were on hand to record Clarkson’s arrival at Vancouver International Airport and post a YouTube video of him signing autographs and posing for photos with fans. Summerland said the production team’s main goal was to find a mountaintop. “They need to go through different geography to get to that mountaintop and the Interior offers a bunch of different geography,” he said. The question on every Top Gear fan’s mind is, of course, will hijinks ensue? No one knows what the show has in store for the VelociRaptor but the trio have a reputation for testing vehicles to extremes. Who can forget Clarkson driving a Ford Fiesta loaded with fully armed Royal Marine commandos off a landing craft into wheel-deep water as part of a beach assault to demonstrate its versatility? Or a Bugatti Veyron supercar drag-racing racing a Typhoon jet fighter – the 1,000-horsepower car speeding horizontally, the fighter vertically? Then there was the time they raced a Ferrari, a Lamborghini and an Aston Martin through the tunnels underneath Romania’s People’s Palace, part of one of the show’s epic road trips.
