Been having a think about this and I know that YouTube has been having some serious bandwidth issues recently. The software I normally use for downloading and converting to .avi has been playing up and unable to find the files from YouTube. It's possible that other video sharing sites are having similar problems as the growth in user numbers has been huge lately. It's a distinct possibility that the problem is nothing to do with your computer and everything to do with the sites you're visiting. However, I would try reinstalling Flash if the problem persists in case the content has been optimised for a different version from the one you have installed, or in case some part of your installation has become corrupted. Just a thought

OK, I need some advice here. My Dad wants a SatNav for Christmas. Given his complete lack of sense of direction (he makes James look VERY capable!) it's a good idea. The only thing is he's a bit deaf and finds complicated, fiddly controls hard to use.
As I get my sense of direction from my Mum, I have no experience of SatNavs. I have spoken to a couple of people, including the RNID, who say that, although he could link it to the loop setting on his hearing aid, everything else would be cut out (Police sirens, horns etc) so that's not a very good idea. Apparently you can also tune the car radio in to them, but presumably that means you can't listen to the radio on the journey. Is this right? Or does it butt in to whatever you're listening to when it has something to say?
It looks like TomTom are the better make, but does anyone have any suggestions about models that are straightforward to use and have a good, loud speaker and a clear voice option? Or something that is good but less expensive than Tom Tom?

Would you like me to take that question to Final Gear? The chaps there seem to be pretty knowledgeable!

I've posted. We'll see if the lads can come up with anything useful. Or possibly one of the ladies, though very few of us "not a dude"s seem to hang out on the technical threads!

And we already have a suggestion - The Magellan RoadMate 1400. I've had a look at some info on Magellan in general, and they're mainly offering entry level systems at a fraction of the price of Tom Tom. They don't have a lot of bells and whistles, but they're quite basic and they seem to have pretty straightforward layouts. it sounds like they also have big arrows that pop up on the screen when a turn is coming up, so if you don't hear the voice commands very well you still know where you're going... I'll let you know as I get more suggestions

Thanks. That one does have good reviews. I'm not sure you can update the maps though.
Keep me informed. ;D

You're somehow trying to copy a folder into itself, apparently.
What software are you using?

OK. What is your operating system (Windows XP/Vista/Mac/Linux etc.) And do you burn stuff to CD using the inbuilt software or do you use a program like Nero to do it? The reason I ask is because the screens look different and it'll be easier to help you if I know which you're using

Sorry I've taken a while to get back, I wanted to burn some stuff to cd just to remind myself of the process because last time I had to save anything, I did it with a weird bit of software because my hard drive had broken down Anyway, if you put a blank CD in the drive, you can just drag and drop the files onto it. On the left hand side of the window, you'll see a box that says 'CD Writing Tasks'. Underneath there is the option to write the files to the CD. When you've dragged everything in there, click on that and the computer will burn them onto the disk. Hope that helps

You could upload them and do it elsewhere, but you'll still need to do the same thing.
BTW, you might get a warning telling you that there is extra information that will be lost. Usually it's nothing vital, like information on when the files were created, and it's fine to just go ahead, especially with pictures and text files. There's not really a lot there that will go wonky.

You can get them off Youtube if they are on there. The quality might not be as fantastic, but it's possible

Actually, it can be done, but you need the right software and you have to have lots of hard drive space. You can use the same kind of software I use to save the videos from the BBC news site since they changed their format.
What you need is a piece of capture software that can save the output for your monitor and sound card. You have to do it 'real time' (i.e. you have to start the programme you want to save and let it run without using the computer for anything else) and you need to make sure your screensaver is turned off. The program I use is called Replay Video Capture and it isn't freeware so you have to pay for it. The files it saves will be HUGE but they can be converted to other formats. Of course, if you save it in a suitable format, you can put the resulting video onto DVD.
