Eek, thanks Wy... I think that may be beyond my pc skills I only wanted to try and save the BTCC from the ITV4 iplayer. I may just watch it as often as I can over the next 27 days, until I'm sick of it

Ok, I have a file on word, that I need to transfer into Adobe reader, and then make it available as a link online. Anyone know how to do that?

Right, I believe Adobe Reader is what used to be Adobe Acrobat Reader, in which case, the file format you need is .pdf. I'm not completely sure, but I think the most recent version of Office has .pdf as a file format and you'd just need to open the document, click 'save as' and choose .pdf from the menu of file types. However, if it doesn't, or you don't have that version, you'll need a file converter as Adobe Reader only reads .pdf files, it doesn't create them.
Fortunately, this is actually quite easy. Just Google 'convert files to pdf' and you'll get a list of converters, some of which are free downloadable software and some of which will convert the file online. Choose one you like the look of and follow the instructions. Then upload it to wherever it is you need to upload it (to make it available online, you'll need webspace somewhere, unless you've already got a specific site you need to upload it to).

Can anyone here reccommend any streaming video recording software, one that works? I have tried lots in the past but they never worked quite right. Any suggestions most welcome, thank you.

I've used Streamdown in the past, but it's only a 15 day trial. It's not perfect, but this one, for example, was done with Streamdown - www.angelfire.com/weird2/wyvernslair/TG_Germans.aviI'm currently using using Replay Video Capture, but that's not freeware. You can save anything from your monitor with that, but it has to record it 'live' rather than downloading it from the source.

Ok, thanks for that, I will have a look at them. Sorry, can I ask, what is the difference between recording 'live' and recording from the source? Is the source version like finding a link, say off You Tube, and pasting it into the software and then recording?

Exactly right. And Streamdown works that way too. But when you record 'live', you're recording an area of output on your screen, so you have to leave that window open and not open any windows over it or whatever...

Oh, thank you. That is something more for me to think about. If I find something different or similar that is free, and that works, I will pass it on to you. Thank you for your help.

What (or indeed who) is SPYKEE? My computer keeps trying to connect to a signal from it, instead of the wireless router upstairs less than ten metres from where I'm sitting, and it's driving me mad, because every time it does, I have to shut down the internet and try to re-route the signal manually. HALP!

SPYKEE appears to be a wi-fi controlled Meccano robot...

Does that mean the pc's picking up the robot's signal? Either that, or my 'puter is trying to send signals to the robot. This could be FUN ;D

Does that mean the pc's picking up the robot's signal? I could be mistaken, but it does sound like that could be it, though I'm surprised it would have enough range to upset an internet connection in another house. Tell you what... dare you to download the driver software and see if you can really annoy whoever owns the robot...

For all I know, SPYKEE has razed his owner's house by now ;D What I do know is that he's playing havoc with my connection *growls* Three times in the last two hours it's reset itself to SPYKEE, and I've had to do a lot of running about and switching off and back on again. This is becoming not-very-funny

That's not good You can only hope you're doing as much damage to their connection!

You can only hope you're doing as much damage to their connection! There is that, of course ;D I've been sitting here thinking, who on earth out of our neighbours would own such a thing? And come up with no answers - this end of the street, there's nobody that would have one, that I can honestly think of. I have no idea how powerful the connection would be - maybe somebody over the other side of the railway? But that would mean it has a really powerful reach, and as it's only an ickle robot, that seems unlikely.

Short of knocking on every door in the area, I'll never know who owns the thing - unless I can make it take a picture and then get that picture sent to my computer ;D which is a little bit above my poor techie capabilities, methinks!

You should be able to go into the list of wireless connections and tell your computer not to connect to SPYKEE. Unfortunately, I can't remember how to do it

|
|
Post by TheDaisy on Jun 28, 2009 22:43:18 GMT
I *may* have done that. I'm not sure - I had a list of five possible connections at one point, and I think I stopped all but Belkin, which is the one I want to connect to.
Okay, I'm a liar - SPYKEE is still appearing on the list of 'possible to connect to'. Bum. Although I'm still online, so maybe he's shut up for the night *fingers crossed*

I don't want to alarm you but have you got your wireless locked? I have heard stories about people getting free internet connection through other people's wireless connections because they didn't lock them. Example, you have wireless which is unlocked, the person next door can connect to the internet through your router. Hope you get it fixed, having a problem and not being able to solve it is one of the most frustrating things that can happen.

It is locked. TOH made sure of that, and I have a padlock that appears next to 'my' connection on the screen. It's the robot that is unlocked, so I'm connected to him, not he to me. It's just that this stupid computer will connect to him rather than to my wireless 'net connection. He must be very close by, I just cannot think where he must be.

Ah, ok, well at least you know that it isn't anything too wonky on your part. Do you think that if the SPYKEE person locked off their connection that might help?

OK, techy people, here's a puzzler.
I have a disc with bits of software on it and I am going through it to try and see what bits I need and don't need anymore, I found one of the bits I need and I can't get it off the disc, I get a message saying something about an invalid DOS function. Is there any software or procedure out there that will let me extract the bit I need from the disc so I can put it on to a new one or is it gone completely?
