Marhaba! Impressive! I have lived in saudi arabia for 3 years and I know how hard arabic is!

I speak both french and flemish at home and was trilingual by the time I was 5! I would love to learn chinese,danish and russian but those are a killer to learn. Easiest in russian to remember is eta bashalushta which means this please and dva butil vodka 2 bottles of vodka LOL!!! All you need to know!! Talk soon am of to Lille, France this afternoon! I live 15 minutes from the french border!! Toodles!!

I found the phrase "err... estoi Anglichanka" to be particularly useful in Russian. It didn't help me communicate, but it at least explained why I couldn't!

I had a French teacher that told me that the most useful phrase to know in any language is that you didn't speak the language.

I don't actually believe that, it just seemed to follow on from Puss's comment, and I thought it was funny! But I am very sensitive so be gentle with me! Please! ;D

What I actually believe is that it is a living language which is subject to change and change it will - radically - I think, to the point where it is probably classed as diaglossic, like Arabic, where children actually have to learn the standard version in schools, pretty much as a second language, because they will speak the vernacular as their mother tongue.

I knew it was dangerous logging on before work - I'm outta here! (murderous enough?)

Hi all! I love that one, Linden. Have to go and have a look in a bit. Trouble with irony is that sometimes no matter how far your tongue is in your cheek when you say things, the reader/listener will add their own meaning. I wish I was feeling fresh right now, Clementine, but I'm feeling very jaded after this morning's teaching! I think I should go for a nice bracing walk, before long.

EDIT - Well I've just perused the majority of them. Must say that I found Wy's to be the best read; I really enjoyed that one. Laughed out loud about the vicar and his caravanning over-taking him, though I think I've read that one before.

I missed that one! It is indeed funny. Could be anyone - you can call yourself anything (presumably within reason) when you post, and, although you have to give an email address, unlike other sites - such as The Guardian newspaper - you don't have to register in order to comment.
