I'm not going to have a rant. And I would like to say that the following is NOT aimed at anyone in particular - I'm just hoping that as this is a board for fans of James, the more 'nutcase' element of the fandom might lurk sometimes and might read this... 1. I am assuming that the person who 'tracked him down to his local pub where he always thought he would be safe' is a misguided 'fan' who has no idea of How Not To Piss Off The Person You Are A Fan Of. And quite bloody rude at the same time. I gather from the tone of voice that it was someone who actually approached him in the Cross Keys and disturbed him, rather than someone who happens to be a fan of James May being in the pub at the same time as he was, which is a VERY different thing. 2. However, The Cross Keys is A PUBLIC HOUSE and James has mentioned many times that it's his local, as well as filming in there several times. It's a lovely pub - it serves decent food and a wonderful pint of London Pride. I don't think it's fair to expect people who happen to be fans of James who live nearby or have friends who regularly drink in there to avoid it. (In the same way that I regularly go for tea and cake in Jaffe and Neales in Chippy, even though someone famous frequents it...) I think what I'm trying to say here is that there is a huge difference between visiting a pub or a bar or a restaurant or a shop that happens to be the same one that a famous person uses and hanging out somewhere hoping someone famous will come in, and then going over and bothering them. People who deliberately visit a pub to disturb James are STALKERS and they need to stop. James has hundreds, thousands of fans. People who stalk him make life very, very uncomfortable for those of us who are ordinary fans. Beckstar, I think you've nailed it absolutely. You have got it spot on. Having listened to the comment James made, I think you've summed up the difference very nicely between someone who behaves inappropriately and one who doesn't. Well maybe wy you should be in my shoes....sorry.

I have absolute respect for him. I would not do anything that infringed his privacy, nor have I ever in the nearly six years I've been a fan. But telling anyone to 'stay away' from a pub is not realistic. Stay away if you've travelled from Manchester specially - that's PATHETIC. Stay away if you're going to bother him with inane questions - that's RUDE. Stay away if you're going to stare at him and giggle while he sits and does the crossword. Stay away if you're going to ask the bar staff if they've 'seen that bloke off Top Gear', or if you want to take photos like it's some kind of bloody pilgrimage. But if you happen to be going in for the quiz night with your friend who lives round the corner, let's be honest, a pub is a pub is a pub.
I agree that people who stalk celebrities need to be reigned in - that was actually the point of my post. But I don't think me and my mate popping down for a pint and a roast dinner on a Sunday afternoon is going to put this board, or the one that I moderate, at any risk at all. (To put it into perspective, I live in Chipping Norton. I also happen to be a fan of Jeremy Clarkson. If I took the 'avoid people you are fans of' analogy to the nth degree, I'd never be able to go out!)

That's fine you go ahead.......but I have to say for me it's embarrassing seeing as he has full knowledge of who you are...bear that in mind.

I don't think this board or HH will be coming to an end either because of this. I think that if people are tracking him down deliberately then it is very different, yes, but it's where you draw the line I suppose. If I went to the Cross Keys pub for instance I would be going there because I know it's his pub. I don't live there, I have no need to be in the area, but yes, if my mate lived round the corner maybe, although I'd be aware I knew it was where he went and personally, I'd probably say let's go to another. Most of us have our own boundaries but sadly a few don't and they're the ones that cause the misery.

I respect your point of view as well, lew, and I agree with you on the point of giving the guy his space and protecting his interests. I'm in Devon, which makes it academic for me, but the situation Becks mentions with Jaffe and Neale is similar to the situation in my parents' village so I don't see happening to be in the same place at the same time as someone else as something unusual. HOWEVER, that is NOT to say that it is OK to purposely track down a place to spend time in a place with the aim of disturbing someone - stalkerish behaviour is ALWAYS UNACCEPTABLE. Seen that happen in the village too, and it isn't a nice thing.

That's fair enough. I've been in that particular pub maybe, I dunno, ten times in eight years (yes, my love of the pub predates my fandom of James...) and I've never seen him. I probably never will. I don't go to the Cross Keys to look for James like I don't go in my local WHSmith to hunt Jeremy... I go to the pub to go to the pub and the shop to buy a paper.
My entire point is that people who DO behave inappropriately (by, for example, making a special journey to a pub and then waiting for him and disturbing him) make life very difficult for those of us who are just getting on with our lives and happen to be a fan of someone vaguely famous as a hobby...

Im not sure how long James was on, as the pod cast was first half James, and the other Phil Glenister.
Personally i would never go down and hunt down the pub he visits, that would be too weird, and i adore and respect James to much for that too happen.

I've been in London all weekend, only a spit away from Hammersmith and never once felt the urge to go find the Cross Keys. I think it's called self-restraint.

I haven't listened to the clip yet. But someone going in and disturbing him? Isn't that called insanity?

Changing the subject slightly, and having now listened to the clip, what was up with the woman at the end of the interview? Attack attack attack. The comment that they were mocking lorry drivers seems to have missed the entire point of the piece. They actually were pointing out just how difficult it is to drive one of those things, and how perhaps we should all give them the space they deserve.

There may well be more - it would seem that Richard may be Gene Hunt's latest sidekick, but only for the purposes of Children in Need!! (and yes, I know the photo is incongruous with this thread, but I wanted to spread Philip Glenister around... )

I finally got to listen to it!! God, his voice was sexy. Very enjoyable. I can't wait to see the rest of the TG season, I can't wait to see the British adventure, and I'm really looking forward to the new Moon programme. I love anything to do with the moon and space. He'd be perfect for a space programme of any type. I love how down to earth and honest he is. This really cheered me up even more. Thank you all for putting links to it.

Was that the whole interview on the podcast thingy? No problems here with visiting pub, or any pub, or booksigning or top gear show taping etc etc, since I live a trillion miles away

Just listened to this (thanks MG). The exact same thing with the cider happened to me when I was young. Even after all these years, the thought of cider still makes me feel ill . However, . Regarding the person who turned up at his local – it didn’t necessarily have to be some kind of crazed, love struck, stalker-type woman. It could’ve been some kind of crazed, (possibly love struck?), stalker-type petrolhead fanboi. Either way, it crossed a line and is really not on. [pedant] Also, I hope that Mr May won’t be referring to the Moon as a planet in his upcoming programme (like he did in 20thC). The Moon is a moon! [/pedant]
