It usually looks like that. I think it's because the soil is mostly clay around there and at that point the river is tidal. Despite appearances, the River Avon has very high water quality and is one of the most biodiverse waterways in the country. In fact, the Avon Gorge, which is the bit the bridge spans, is a site of special scientific interest. But it does look horrible, and at low tide in the summer it gets a bit stinky too!

Bit like where I live, on the North Antrim coast. In the really hot weather, that we don't get very often here, (Ulster coastlines are never what you would call 'warm' ) when the tide goes out you smell the seaweed. I have lived here all my life and I still can't get used to that smell. And at the top of the area where I live, there are some farmlands. When, during the Summer, the farmer spreads the muck, that stinks as well, and I have never got used to that either.

The Severn Estuary funnels very high tides - there's a rise of around 15 metres or 40 to 50 feet ( 2nd highest tide in the world) so I suppose that is bound to stir up a bit of mud to take up to Bristol. I love the bridge - the most poignant view of it includes Concorde going home for the last time to Filton.

I would put it up but I can't steal the paper away from household yet. In the Times there is a small picture and wording of James looking very windswept on Clifton Suspension Bridge. I'll get it later

Windswept and suffering from vertigo. He must have felt quite miserable.

Can't help noticing he is wearing the dark blue stripey again. Must be one of his favourite shirts at the moment.

He has got a new furry anorak too. It's the one he was wearing on those recent pics on his bike (you know, including the lovely one where he's expressing himself digitally at the papps). Must be a new favourite

He has got a new furry anorak too. I do believe that's the one he had on when he was snapped while riding his bicycle recently - he had a yellow toggle thing on that coat, IIRC.

Ah. Can I ask, what does IIRC mean? I am old and not very well up on text speak, if that is what it is.
