Having to go to work anyway 'cos there are patients waiting for me. I must be the only person that starts cycling to work when it snows

Now that I'm no longer a car owner, the worst thing about snow days is if it messes up the public transport network at a time when you need to go somewhere. It's just a bit of snow, for crying out loud! When I was still a car owner, the worst thing about snow days was trying to handle a rear wheel drive car on slippery roads. Possible, but a bit dodgy!

Now you see I much prefer rear wheel drive to front in the snow - find it much easier to handle, strangely. My current car (a Lotus) is in theory the worst type for driving in the snow - rear wheel drive, with the combination of its light weight and fat tyres meaning I shouldn't get good enough grip. But it all seems to work! I just daren't drive it 'cos of other muppets on the road who think that 50mph is an acceptable speed when it's icy!

Well, they decided to shut my school at 1pm which sounds good but then again, I had to struggle to get there this morning and slide a bit on the way back home! Even worse though is that it's not looking good for my trip to London tomorrow

Any idea about the trains, and crossing London?
If I come, I'll be arriving at Euston and cabbing it to Canary Wharf. Am I likely to make it, those "on the ground" (as it were!) down there?
If there aren't likely to be any problems actually in London, then I've got to find out/make a decision based on whether I might get delayed and be sitting on a train when everyone's gone home!

Trains are fine, well southeastern are, even the Red Buses are running, just the country parts here London is well open, it's I suppose when you get out of town.

South of the river I'm afraid southeastern is coping too well. A lot of cancellations and delays. Roads generally not gritted outside of London especially A roads. Wonder who they sold all the salt to this year? Took me 2 1/2 hours to do an hour journey. Central London however has no snow on the ground, tubes and buses are generally fine.

I agree with Lew. Without wishing to tempt fate, as long as you can get to London you should be fine getting from Euston to Canary Wharf. There are certainly no delays on any underground routes at the moment, and the roads are clear. I'm lucky in that I get into Waterloo then it's just a couple of stops on the underground. I'm not sure how far you're coming from, but I think it's definitely worth the risk of the journey.

Knowing my luck, if I manage to get to Derby to catch the Derby to St Pancras train I've booked, it will be delayed and James will have debunked by the time I land at Canary Wharf. Not going to stop me trying though. Can I have a Man Badge if I make it? Also still waiting for the one I reckon I deserve for assembling an 8 drawer Ikea chest!

Well, encouraged by all your advice I've booked my train tickets, especially as I got the return ticket for a third of the price by booking at the station just before 6pm today. As I'm coming from Lancashire that's a considerable saving.
So I hope to see some of you in the queue. I'll be the one dressed as Nanook of the North (though if the train runs very late and I miss him, I'll be the one having a tantrum outside Waterstones!)

The worst thing about snow days is.....that if I do, genuinely, get snowed in, I will a) get no pay if I don't 'make the effort' by risking my life and turning up for work, and b) if I didn't go in because of the snow, I'd get a disciplinary upon my return. Treu, this. It happened to a former colleague last time it snowed, when she didn't come in. Quite how she could be expected to leave her two kids (aged nine and five) at home all day on their own, as their school had closed because of the snow, I'll never know Apparently it's fine for teachers to not go to work, but not for the parents to not go in when they're needed to guard their kids instead.

I'd strongly advise you not to get a cab from Euston to Canary Wharf, except as a last resort. It's quite a distance, so it would cost the Earth! It's a pretty easy (and much cheaper) journey by Tube. Up to you, though. I hope everything goes OK.

I agree, daisy, my hospital has a similar policy--rather have staff risk their lives to get in than stay home safely.
Fortunately, my direct boss enacts our "departmental" snow policy and allows staff to take the day as a vacation day if they can't make it in, and no black mark on the record either.
Those wonderful souls who make it in are granted 90 minutes time if they're late, too. I'm lucky to have a boss who doesn't suck.

Snow, snow, snow and yet more snow, the novelties wearing a bit thin now. The man is stuck in a snow drift seven miles away, am wondering what time he'll make it home, if at all.
