And now I'm out of pinot noir and could use another bottle... Any recommendations here? Like I said, wine newbie. Needs to be around $10 or so per bottle, can't afford those really pricey ones.

Try Ravenswood - any of their wines are very good. Not sure what your price would be though.

I did not care for their chardonnay, to be honest, but I did like their merlot. Ravenswood was about $10-11 a bottle last time I checked, so that should fit the bill.

My absolute favourite white wine is Gewurztraminer - Alsace French usually, despite what the name might suggest. It isn't bone dry but is a little floral and spicy, very tasty for drinking on its own.

You could take James's advice and try a Zinfandel. The "white" Zinfandel is usually pink and it's very nice! Delicato and Vendange are particularly good ones, if you can find them.

Since we all have varied tastes, I renamed the thread to encompass the whole genre of drinks! ;D ;D I do love wine, even before James & Oz went on their adventures. MOH taught me how to distinguish different tastes in wine and to be a bit of a snob/ponce too. My cocktail of choice would have to be a margarita! Almost any flavor! ;D ;D Yep - Mr Crumbs and his wine ponce mates have taught me a thing or two as well. I have to say however, that it doesn't matter what peeps like or how much it costs - just as long as they enjoy it. I really like New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc but I'm partial to other grapes too. Not so keen on Chardonnay, so my nip naps won't be affected (that is what Oz said isn't it?). Favourite cocktail? That's really hard.....I like so many of them! Quick mod here - nip naps = nipples!

If you can get hold of Alamo Chardonnay - it's very good and well under a tenner. It's one of the few I enjoy. Mind those nip naps Dit (especially when drinking in public)...... I find any wine makes my face flush.....especially if I have more than one glass.

I really like a good Gewurztraminer! I also like White Zinfandel. Really, I like any wine that is sweet. I love a good Ice Wine (super expensive) and Catawbas are probably my favorite. Liking sweet wines makes it tough to share wine with other people. Most people don't like overly sweet wines. (Which my husband calls Kool-aid wines.) But I don't mind light white wines so I often enjoy those when with friends who are wine drinkers.
My favorite mixed drink is called a Screaming Banshee. It is Banana liqueur, Bailey's Irish cream, and cream. That's the way they made it where I went but it can also be made with Banana liqueur, White Creme de Cacao and cream. It is an awesome drink. It tastes like you are drinking an ice cream sundae. Probably has just about as many calories as a sundae too.

Hmm, just tried this and it sounds better than it tastes, but then I added a dash of vodka (because that's what all the recipies say) and probably skimped on the cream because I need the rest of it for what I'm cooking! Not bad though, has potential. I have a problem with sharing wine as well, TOH likes dry, red wine & I like medium white...

Hmm, hello everyone. My parents have left for the night, so I've got some time. Tried a bottle of Gewurztraminer tonight, I fricking LOVE it, I think it's supplanted Chardonnay as my favorite white. Got another bottle of Pinot Noir cause so far it's my favorite red. Could not find Viognier of any kind at the store I was at. Oh well, next time. Thanks for the rec dit, this one is really tasty.

On Friday I sampled some Peasholm pale ale, which was brewed under where we were sitting (in the cellar of The North Riding pub in Scarborough,) It was very citrus smelling and a delightful pint to drink. I don't think it is distributed much beyond where it is brewed, but it should be.

Sounds marvelous, Eshalda! ;D So many of the world's really great ales are brewed in tiny places and rarely are transported very far.

Oh I am so low on alcoholic drinks it's pathetic and really making my day just a bit crappier, and it was already quite crappy.
But I had some coconut rum left! And I mixed it with....apple-passion-mango juice, that was sitting in my freezer. I call it the Desperation Drink. Well, one version of it. I think Apple-Kiwi-Strawberry might've worked too.
It's not half bad.

Currently drinking some KBC Old Ore Dock Scottish Ale. This is DA*N tasty stuff! It's a brewery in my old college town. I know the owner's son. His wife was a good friend of mine back in college. Only got free beer at their wedding. I was pleasantly surprised to find six-packs for sale in one of the liquor stores in town, they tend to not sell much outside the Keweenaw Peninsula. (btw, if anyone's looking for a summer getaway with hardly any people around and absolutely spectacular nature scenery, allow me to recommend the Keweenaw Peninsula. If anyone takes me up on this, I'll then tell you the good bars and restaurants. ) Got a bottle of Viognier last night too. Think I prefer the Gewurztraminer, but thanks for all the previous wine recommendations. Oh yeah...Jameson for whenever my tooth needs to not feel anything. Right now though...I'm gonna enjoy my beer.

I'm not really into alcohol that much, but I recently tried pear cider for the first time. It was awesome! Give me that over beer and wine anytime.

Bought a bottle of riesling while picking up accoutrements for my newish bike and am now debating whether to have a third glass. This stuff is good! For a $10 bottle, WIN. I may not be entirely sober at the moment.
