Jacqui, I saw this photo on Ross Noble's Twitter and thought of you! Perhaps this resort also caters to cats and snakes. Read the last line carefully! ;D Perhaps I ought to take Suzi with me, she could do with a winter break ;D

My advice is for everyone to do as much (or as little) holidaying as is comfortable for them. As for me, I will say we had a fabulous time on our recent trip--the cruise was delightful, but the best part for me was the time in the UK at the end. Next trip, I want 2 weeks or more there. My e-mail/knitting/pen-friend was as wonderful in person as I knew she'd be, and she asked us to come to Dorset (caravan site!) next time. How could I refuse? Won't take up bandwidth here, but I have started uploading for flickr and if you are interested, my photos are here www.flickr.com/photos/92724523@n00/sets/72157626927960081/ Many, many more to come.

My husband and I are going out to my Aunt's farm for the fourth of July holiday weekend. I'm looking forward to relaxing on the porch, reading, and generally doing nothing.

Guess who's got the office to themselves for the rest of the day... *rubs hands together* *disconnects phone line*I'm getting down to nitty-gritties with my holiday planning, and I have a nuffy tourist question for those in the know. If you had the choice of only one, which would you pick: Camden Market or Portobello Road?

Depends... Portobello Road is more geared to antiques, Camden leans towards clothing as well. Camden's probably more manic!
If it's the last weekend in August, Carnival takes place where Portobello Road Market usually is. It's great fun, but it gets absolutely wedged at times, so make tripley sure your purse, camera etc are secure!

I should have come here before going to London! I didn't know about Portobello Road Market. But then again, we did find another antiques market, it wasn't very big, but I met a giant antique bear in a tutu! Camden is interesting, fantastic, but there are moments of oddness. When I went a few weeks ago it was bright, colourful, wonderful, but we did meet a few people that made us feel very un-safe. But that was only in one shop. It was a nice place in order to see people from all over the world in one place though, fantastic!

Thanks for your suggestions re the markets. I'm leaning towards Camden, but I mightn't have the time (nor energy) to go to either, the way things are looking. Will certainly attempt, though. Afar, you're allowed to count down! That's half the fun.

This isn't advice, but i thought I'd share that I've just come home from lovely Glastonbury!! Its my fondest childhood memory!! I spend a lot of my summers there when I was a little girl. It was superb, although some of my favourite shops are gone now.

Back from Greece now! That country is on its knees, but I did my bit to help out!
No-one, but NO-ONE, took plastic - cash only! And then, when cash handed over, straight in the pocket. We didn't see anyone put the cash in the till!
Having said that - lovely place, we could well go back again!

Welcome back.I still have three weeks to go before my holiday starts. At least we are not booked with Holidays 4 UK, so we should get our holiday. Not that we are going to Turkey, but seeing the people waiting to fly out and being told there was no flight or holiday because the company was in administration was heartbreaking.

I don't know! Is that the right one? Someone went there and was relieved she didn't see a certain person because she didn't know how she would react!

I'm going to rant Ladies and gentlemen. I book a plane flight in the UK through a 3rd party called Vayama. It was the cheapest. When I clicked on pay for it I suddenly noticed that $60 had been added to the fare. The airline fees were separate. No where on Vayama's website does it say it charges for their service. I mean an explicit notice. I lost the battle of course. They are in Mountain View California. Do not use them. I could have gotten the flight for a cheaper fare without them. I am extremely pissed off. All this planning and I finally get screwed!

I need some advice. Do you in the UK have car parks next to the tube. Leave your car there for no charge, don't pay the congestion charge, and take the tube into town. I've booked the hotel 50 miles away and thought we could get to town that way.
|
|
|
Post by Mayfayre on Aug 14, 2011 19:02:01 GMT
There are usually car parks at/near tube stations but they are rarely free of charge. The parking is probably about the same as the congestion charge but it's worth it to not have to drive into London, get lost in the one way systems, then have to pay to park 2 miles from where you actually want to get to, because it's the closest spot you can find. If you get to the station after 9:30am, you can get a cheap (I use the term loosely) rate 1 day travelcard that covers you for bus, tube, most trains & DLR through to about 4am the next day. The closer in you get, the cheaper the travel card will be (check a zone map on the Transport for London website) If it's a weekend, check for line and station closures due to engineering work (also on the TFL website)!
