Was thinking it would be nice to have a film club so we could all recommend and discuss movies. I'm a huge film fan of all genres and would be interested to find out what are the other members watch when possible.
To start the ball rolling I'm going to put perfume: the scent of a murderer'. It set in France during the 18 hundreds and follows a young man through his life by trying to find the perfect scent of a woman. It's beautifully shot and well acted with Alan Rickman and Dustin Hoffman.A beautiful film despite of the subject.

I've never wanted to watch it because I love the book so much I think the film would ruin it. Have either of you read the book? I'd like to know how it compares.

Haven't read the book yet! But almost every book is better than the movie about it. Anyway, here are pics of the movies I adore... I have seen more movies since I updated my myspace page, though.. www.myspace.com/natasja.e.lingsma Let me know if you can't see the page!

I've read the book and it compares very well to the movie. The book conveys all the dirt, grime and smells very well and of course the mind of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, they film also manages to grab the essence of the book perfectly which is great cause they are hardly ever able to adapt a story faithfully to film.(Stephan King movies for example).
For anybody who likes a scare with ghost stories I'm recommending a film called 'Fragile' with Calista Flockhart. It is set in the Isle of Man at a rundown and closing hospital were she is a night nurse. The children's ward is the last ward to be closed but the children become haunted by the 'mechanical girl'. A good film for chills and scares.
For comedy lovers 'Paul' with Simon Peg and Nick Frost. Don't really need to explain but it's about an ailen who's been on earth for far to long and has picked up earth habits.Very funny and not serious at all.
For gore lovers 'I spit on your grave' remade Horrible then, still horrible now
Don't do romance really so if somebody can recommend something to me that would be good.

I love good thrillers and fantasy/sci-fi films, some comedies are ok, but mostly not (God I hate Adam Sandler and the like). Perfume is great, haven't read the book so cannot compare. There are certain films I watch again and again, Lord of the Rings trilogy being one (think I like the first part most), Matrix trilogy second and I've also watched the Harry Potter films many many times (Alan Rickman, you see). Some favourites (not all films also some tv-series): Gormenghast. I got the books from a Scottish friend and then saw this BBC masterpiece on tv and then bought it on dvd. Just wonderful fantasy film with nothing supernatural, just great characters (and great actors). Wise Blood. John Huston's amazing film based on one of my favourite novels of all time by Flannery O'Connor. I strongly recommend both the book and the film. Basically a story of a "christian malgé lui". I'm obsessed with stories that have some sort of religious/spiritual agony in them.. Also liked Frank Peretti's novels about fighting angels and demons ;D Lolita. Jeremy Irons and Nabokov, need I say more? Stalker. Russian masterpiece. Often put down by being "too arty" but I don't think so. Not for people who like action ;D Nothing happens, yet lots of suspence. Great acting, wonderful mood. Metropolis. Fritz Lang's silent classic. Despite the main man's desperate overacting it's just overwhelmingly powerful film and the latest restored version explains many gaps that there were before. Brideshead revisited. The series with Jeremy Irons and Anthony Andrews - just pure brilliance. Tried watching the film version 3 times but it's so wrong that I couldn't. Baghdad Café (Out of Rosenheim), Percy Adlon's classic from 1987. Just wonderful, warm, funny, touching. Not to mention the amazing song "Calling You" which brings shivers to my spine. I also collect classic Marilyn Monroe films. They're very entertaining. One comedy is worth mentioning: Dogma. Alan Rickman as a deadpan angel is just ace: "I am Metatron, voice of God" - indeed. ;D There are many many more, but that's enough for now...

I watched Galaxy Quest last night. I'd never seen it before, and dang...I haven't laughed that hard in a good long time. Alan Rickman is AWESOME. Then we Netflixed the most recent Star Trek movie, since we'd just watched a movie(yes sorry, I am American) that basically made fun of Trekkies, and that was decent too. LotR is one of my favorite books(I LOVE the BBC's audiobook version). Just teasing nat, the movies were excellent, even if I didn't necessarily agree with some of Peter Jackson's plot changes vs. the books. I tend to not go to theaters or really watch a whole lot of films. But some favorites are National Treasure and Pirates of the Caribbean(the first ones only, I did not like the sequels AT ALL). The Last Samurai is also one of my absolute favorite movies. Oh. And I also really like some ridiculously stupid movies, like Supertroopers and Spaceballs. Life takes a turn for the much worse, I've been known to watch Supertroopers on repeat. I think the last movie I saw in a theater was Twilight(the first one), and it was because I wanted to see how ridiculous it was...it was better than the book. But I'm looking forward to The Hobbit. Yes, I know I'm waiting awhile. There a similar thread for TV shows we love too, past and present? Then again...that could be dangerous. I co-mod a now-long-dead TV show discussion rec community on LiveJournal.

I'm a big fan of lotr and the hobbit. I think Alan Rickman is a fantastic actor. I wanted to email top gear and ask them to have him on but alas I didn't. I found Michael McIntyre to be one of the funniest people I have ever heard when he was on the show. I'm a grandma under 60 and spent much time overseas because I was an army brat. Any Rupert Penry-Jones fans here?

Has Colin Firth ever been on the show or Robin Williams? I recognized most of your movies. They talk about Bruce Willis, wonder if they've ever asked him. A good movie with John Travolta is "Michael". He plays an overweight, smoking, drinking angel?

I tend to not go to theaters or really watch a whole lot of films. Totally agree with you about the LotR books and audio books. What a marvelous creation! ;D ;D The movies were good - even better if you hadn't read the books. I was disappointed in several of Peter Jackson's changes. Although, I realize you can't film the book page by page. The last film I went to see in the theater was... let me think now... um... Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix. It was a birthday present from a couple of friends. I'm guessing I still wouldn't have seen it if they hadn't taken me. Before that were the last two LotR movies and The Wild Thornberry's Movie. I can be a sucker for a cartoon! ;D ;D Spaceballs is a favorite in our house too. ;D Along with Men In Tights, Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. I see a Mel Brooks theme occurring here. I've been leaning more towards old movies lately. Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, Doris Day - their movies have been big hits with us. Doris Day's The Glass Bottom Boat has to be one of my all-time favorites. I also adored her in Do Not Disturb (an American moves to the English countryside). ;D

Men in Tights, Dracula-Dead and Loving It, and Blazing Saddles are also popular here. ;D Haven't seen Young Frankenstein. I don't expect a movie or a book to translate the same obviously, but some of Peter Jackson's plot changes were the complete opposite of the book and/or made no frigging sense at all! The only movie his changes really annoyed me in was The Two Towers, loved the other two, and I still like The Two Towers movie a lot. Except for a couple choice scenes. But you and I can rant/discuss that at length elsewhere. I think I stopped watching the Harry Potter movies because I really disliked the 4th one. I liked the first three, but I almost always tend to be disappointed with movie adaptations of books I really like. This is why I've not seen the movie version of The Time Traveler's Wife(excellent book though everyone should read it now). Twilight...well, let's just say I didn't really love that book at all. I was on a Hitchcock kick last year for a bit, and Vertigo and Rear Window are two others I really liked. North by Northwest too.

Watched The Rite starring Anthony Hopkins. It's a good film and didn't freak me out. Hopkins is at his best doing a turn as an exorsist who has taken on a young priest who is losing faith. It's set in Florence and has some good effects but isn't cheesy. It tells a story that plays out quite well. I'd give it a 3 out of 5. Probably wouldn't watch if you dislike people speaking in tongues.
My fave film for a few years has been 'Let The Right One In'.I love foreign films(sic) and actually read the book before seeing the film. It's a sweet little film even with Eli the vampire.I love all the asian horror films too.
The last film I went to see on cinema was 'X Men 1st Class' fueling my daughters X men habit.Saying that it was a good film. I liked LOTR film but I've been trying to read the books since I was 10 and got really bored saying that I can't wait to see the Hobbit cause I did read that. I'm really into the whole horror movie thing and the best comedy ever in my opinion is See No Evil Hear No Evil and Austin Powers films, they never feel to make me laugh.
Oh and HIya paba56

Watched them incessantly when I was growing up. There have been several books made into films where they've ruined them. The biggest flop I've seen was Chocolat. The book was magnificent! I adored every character and every description. The movie was a shambles. The only saving grace for it was Dame Judi Dench's performance! Rear Window - such a classic!! ;D ;D

I love Ghostbusters! A friend of mine sent me a bunch of her old DVDs I didn't have copies of since she upgraded to a Blu-Ray, and that was among them. Working on knowing all the lines in that one too. ;D Never heard of Stripes.

Stripes is another Bill Murray/Harold Ramis movie -along with John Candy. They join the army... comedy ensues! ;D ;D
If you read and like Chocolat, you'll like Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris as well. ;D

Nice idea Antonia... I love a good horror film, but not the Friday the 13th kind, I like the supernatural/poceesed type horrors, best watched alone in the dark with a bag of peanuts and a LP Like a romance but have to be in the right mood and they have to be older fims they are more classy and geuninely romantic- "Love Story" - Ryan O'neil & "The Way we Were" - robert redford and barbara streisand. "Brief Encounter" My favorite most recent film would be "Shutter Island". Looking forward to Paul, Simon Pegg is V funny.

I'm glad you approve Jacqui.I thought I might get a rollicking for not asking the mods. Everyone likes a good film.
I've read Shutter Island but I was a bit dubious about watching it,I might have a go now. In the possesion theme The Exorcisim of Emily Rose is good.
Devil is a good film for scares.
I'm also a sucker for Doris Day films and Hitchcock.
I also love the Blues Brothers,Animal House and Dragnet anything with the lovely late John Candy in it.

I watched Black Swan last night. It was alright but I don't think it was worth an Oscar! Basically it shows the battle between a ballet dancer wrestling with her inner demon.I came to the conclusion that to be a ballet dancer you have to be mental anyway. The best bits where watching bits of Swan Lake. I'd say 3.5/10.(Barry Norman stylie).
