www.abingdonmuseum.org.uk/museumbun.htmDoes everything except explain quite why ;D We also have cheese rolling, bog snorkelling, wife carrying, wellie hurling... Bun flinging is quite tame, considering ;D Round my way, we call it welly wanging. Never tried it, though.

Is the aim to catch as many buns as possible to minimise the risk of starvation until next year, or is it to dodge as many buns as possible, or if throwing, to hit as many targets as possible? ;D

Sell him your slowest boat !! He won't even buy a pair of waders, let alone a boat, I've had to lend them waders!
Mike went down the harbour to watch James May filming some fishing wotsit thingybobyumminess has arrived!! coming out of that thing doesnt help either!

It's free food, innit!

Thanks for the info, dit. I work in Abingdon, and I'll definitely go over on that Sunday. I'm told that last year they had some disappointed people at the bun-throwing because most of the buns were caught by people in the middle of the crowd and those on the edges missed out. So it will be James's job to ensure an even distribution of buns. I expect he'll produce graphs I'll be happy if I catch a few crumbs from his own fair hands!

He's been a busy boy today - Camden market at lunchtime and by teatime he was in the market square at Abingdon A lot of people had their cameras out and here's a really good shot - many thanks to the photographer. I have absolutely no idea what he has in his hands, by the way! Abingdon Council's official website states SUNDAY 3 JUNE 6pm - Bun Throwing, our Abingdon-on-Thames tradition, from the roof of County Hall Museum, Market Place but I've also picked up info from people going (in the sense of going anyway, nothing to do with James) that you have to be there early to stand any chance of getting anywhere near.

Surveying equipment? The pole thing I mean. Don't know, just a wild guess. The top looks like a surveying prism. EDIT: Haa, haa. I just asked my husband what he thought it was and he said a lightsaber. "Maybe that's his next Man Lab task; building your own lightsaber", said my husband enthusiastically. He's such a geek. ;D

I think he's adapted the pork sword as a bun-launcher. Like the belt of many things, it's the tool of many things.

I thinks it's some sort of device to measure the distances and angles required for precision bun-launching. Expecting great things James.

It's one of my chief bugbears with James - I wish he'd undo his cuff buttons and roll his flippin' sleeves up sometimes. Apart from anything else, I happen to like elbows.

Thanks for the pics, Dit! I noticed he wore his striped purple pink sweatshirt as welll..! He must have felt H.O.T. And I do think he looks hot so cute.. That thing he has in his hands looks like where workmen measure the tiles on the street with, if they are all straight lying next to each other. Maybe when you'1e a man you gotta know how to lay roads?

The letters page of the Telegraph has been including missives from people saying how they will be celebrating the Queen's Jubilee, and this cropped up today. (I'm not offering the webpage as there's a lot on it)
SIR – Here in Abingdon-on-Thames, the second largest town in Oxfordshire, we are organising not only a long street party with more than 1,500 people, but also a weekend of events for local people to enjoy, including bun-throwing. Bun-throwing is unique to Abingdon. Councillors and Freemen go to the top of the 17th-century County Hall (now a museum) and throw buns to the townspeople in the Market Place. This has been going on for more than 300 years to celebrate royal and other important occasions. Last year, for the royal wedding, 5,000 buns were thrown to some 6,000 people. This year we have 6,000 buns, 100 for each year of the Queen’s reign. It is difficult to throw the buns to the back of the crowd, but James May (the presenter of Man Lab) has made a couple of devices that he will be trying out to help us. We look forward to celebrating the Diamond Jubilee with fervour and style.
Monica Lovatt Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames Abingdon, Oxfordshire
