It's my Aston Martin driving day tomorrow. I have to be up early to get to Elvington Airfield by 9:30. Yes, that's the airfield where Richard had his crash.

I've just got back from Elvington, what a fantastic, exhilerating day. After checking in and producing my driving licence I was taken for a 'familiarisation of the track' lap in a Range Rover, it was a sort of conducted tour of what you had to do at this and that coloured cone and how to tackle the chicanes. I think we had all reached saturation point after the first chicane. Back in the pits, my name was called and I was introduced to my instructor, Brian and my Aston (a Vantage.) I could have happily just sat in the car and enjoyed the luxury and the dash board, but off we went on our lap. 'Take it easy on the first lap,'I was told, but after that he let me loose. My top speed was 115mph, and the whole experience was just fantastic. I rather reluctantly drove back into the pits, but my experience was not yet over, my son (who booked me this birthday treat - back in February,) had also booked me a 'Hot Lap,' driven by a professional driver, that was really something else altogether. It was a really memorable and very, very, enjoyable. I have pictures and I'll try to post one or two of them. I might just mention that at one point I didn't think we'd get to the airfield in time, as we had to battle through the traffic that couldn't get into York, Tadcaster or Selby because of the floods. The flood plains we saw were truly of Biblical proportions, poor people living in and around them.

We used to play a version of Six Degrees at work, where you had to connect yourself to a famous person by the most obscure route possible.
My best - and most unlikely - one is me to Angelica Huston in four (I have a brother who used to play in a band with a guy called Steve whose father was LA artist Robert Graham who was married to Angelica Huston). By extension I can connect to John Huston in five and Walter Huston in six.
Anyone else care to have a go?

Working on that but in the meantime...
I got back from a slightly tense dress rehearsal at 11pm only to have, ten minutes later, a police 'incident' outside my house. The couple next door have 'domestics' but this time it was ghastly - there were five police cars, a police van, a local council safety van (didn't know they existed) and another car, and they restrained this guy on my parking bay/in my drive for 45 minutes. There was a great deal of yelling and swearing until they eventually took him away in the van.
They then did a search with torches in my drive and front garden, lord knows what for (a weapon?) then drove away. Although there were seven police persons attending, at no point did anyone attempt to tell me what was going on or why they were in my garden. After they'd all driven away I phoned 101 and I'm waiting for someone to ring me back.
Basically, I want assurance that myself and the elderly lady who lives next door are not at any risk (though that's unlikely as the anger is aimed at his partner). More importantly, if they're looking for something in the dark and not finding it, I might find it in daylight tomorrow but not realise the significance as I don't know what they were looking for (if you see what I mean).
You couldn't imagine a more peaceful area until recently. It's such a shame.

I live in the centre of town - my street runs off the High Street - and consequently is frequently the venue for much weirdness which the police have to sort out. In my experience, they never tell anyone what's going on. Once we had two cars screech to a halt outside my house and armed coppers in bullet-proof vests pile out and position themselves behind their cars, guns trained up the street. As I was just on my doorstep at the time unlocking the door, it would have been nice if they'd told me to get out of the way or something. I've also had two of them shining torches over the fence into my garden from next door. Again, no explanation.
Hope everything calms down soon

They don't give you any information over here either. A few years' back I had police arresting a guy in my driveway (it's the widest on the street) and they wouldn't tell me what was going on at all. And of course there was nothing about it in the paper, because our paper is mostly student-run (school of journalism) and doesn't acknowledge the existence of the city north of Smiley Lane. Hopefully that sort of excitement is done, dit! On the home front, I had a super smooth fresh asphalt road to drive to my parents. Just lovely. Especially with new tires. Which did make it slightly harder to pull off the sideways maneuver on the dirt road close to their house. Oh darn, safe tires... I'm so naughty.

At least I know that the 101 number works. I had a phone call from one of the female officers who attended, who gave me as much imformation as she reasonably could. I'll go next door tomorrow to talk to the elderly lady there who will undoubtedly be upset, and possibly to the even more elderly lady across the road (though she's stone deaf, and may not even realise that anything has happened!) I feel better now that I know what was going on.

Thankfully, my little condo community has been very quiet lately. We have several major fires, one in my building and another in the building connected to mine. That has to be the most frightening experience I've ever undergone, standing outside, not knowing what will be the condition of your place when the firemen leave. Thank goodness, I have not had any damage, although they knocked my door in. And then the condo association paid to have it replaced.
