Oh no. I'm sure if Hamilton's car was up to scratch they'd be fighting it out at the top.

This is absolutely where F1 is won or lost, but then again, this is also why there are two parts to the championship, the Driver's Championship and the Constructor's Championship. F1 is about creating the best possible car and then matching it to the best possible driver. Jenson's always been good, but Honda didn't quite get the cars right (hmm... developments in F1 often filter into other areas of motoring technology... what with all the 'Earthdreams' malarkey, maybe they were using their F1 cars as a testbed for the Insight hybrid, that would explain it...), whereas Ross Brawn has the golden touch no matter who he's working for. Lewis is a phenomenal driver - if you watch him, he's still pulling off the occasional flash of brilliance - but this year he's in a lousy car.
Where I think the really interesting stuff happens is between the two drivers within a team. There will be differences in the setup of their cars, but there are sometimes marked differences between their performances that can't be put down to that alone. Maybe some of it is down to team orders (which would be naughty), but some of it at least is down to differences in the way they drive. This is why I'm feeling a bit sorry for Rubens Barrichello, because he's doing almost as well as Jenson, but not quite, and I wonder whether that has more to do with instructions than talent.
But with my less analytical head on, all I want to do is jump up and down and shout, "Yay, Jenson," because I've been maintaining for a very long time that he just needed a decent car. And now he's got one ;D
On the Lewis issue... you know, I'm not so sure. Over the last two years he's had great cars and he undoubtedly has a lot of talent, but what I've spotted this year is that he's a bit too impetuous, and because he's not doing so well, it's more noticeable. He makes silly mistakes, and frustration with that awful car may play a part in that, but I think that's a question of maturity. I was dead chuffed that he won last year, but I think if he takes a couple of seasons to mature and to iron out his occasional bursts of hotheadedness and his silly actions that get him into trouble, he's got the potential for greatness. Two years ago, that was, I think, what lost him the championship, and last year he didn't exactly take the crown in a decisive manner. But give him time to become more consistent and I believe he will.

Excellent post wy. Lewis is young and doing the best with a car that is not - yet - up to scratch. I just hate the 'do down the winner' attitude of some folk :(Even with a sh*t car Lewis has managed to get a few points on the board. What does that say about his undoubted talent I'm chuffed that Jensen is doing so well but looking back over the years, I get the feeling that he has been content to earn the brass without really putting it on the line (I'm ducking already to avoid the responses from the all new Jensen fans ) It is all about the combination of the two parts as you said. We're not halfway through the season yet after all and lewis put some scorching laps in towards the end of the Monaco GP. I've not given up on him yet

I think to an extent you're right, Inky - Jenson's certainly enjoyed the lifestyle over the last few years, and until this season had what, one career win? But then again, maybe he's matured a bit too - the arsing about wasn't such a big deal when the car wasn't competitive, but now he's in a car in which he stands a chance of doing very well, it's like he's found his focus. I can understand why so many people wrote him off when Honda went down the toilet, but I think anyone would be hard-pressed to argue against the consistency of his current form. But you're right to keep an eye on Lewis, too - as McLaren keep working on the car, he's showing improvements with each race, and that's beginning to translate into points. I don't think he's likely to have the best of seasons, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if his final points tally is quite respectable, as long as he can keep his nose clean.
Mind you, now Ron Dennis has stepped down from the F1 team, I suspect there will be a shift in the FIA's attitude to certain transgressions (the suspended penalty was a bit of a surprise...). Perhaps they'll be seen to be a little more even-handed this season, which again, can only be a good thing.

Totally agree on the Ron Dennis situation. There was definitely a secret agenda (not) going on whilst he was in charge. I think Lewis caught the thick end of the stick regarding the Australia incident and Ron was right to go. I still think Lewis is the hottest, best thing to emerge on the F1 scene since Schumacher

A quote from The Guardian, March 2009....
Jenson Button
Age 29 Great Britain GP debut Aus 2000 Starts 155 Wins 1 Poles 3 Best 3rd, 2004 (BAR) 2008 18th Title odds 66-1
The Knowledge
Owns, and occasionally drives round London, a vintage 1956 Volkswagen camper van, in which he might have a better chance of a race win than he would with poor old Brawn GP.
A few red faces now? ;D

They've still got to win it What really annoys me is the typical British attitude to a winner (Lewis). Now he is the Champ, lets knock him down. If.....I mean IF....Jensen does it this year, it'll be his turn in 2010 for a kicking. That's if he decides to carry on. Personally, I think he will take the easy option and retire

It's just a term used to describe the phenomena of building someone up, only to knock 'em down when they become 'big' (like a tall poppy I guess?)

Cheers Liz. I'm a bit slow on the uptake today That's exactly what I mean. Build 'em up (Lewis) last season and hammer 'em down this. Look out Jensen

Inky, you're so right. Lewis doesn't deserve to be bashed just because he's done well and now he's not doing so well. Look back over this thread and you'll see I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Jenson fan, but that doesn't mean I want to see Lewis spattered all over the tarmac, but there's this horrible tendency for people to bring people down and it's not fair. I mean, just because someone's doing well doesn't mean that people who've done well in the past have to suddenly be dreadful. Next year, if Jenson does well this season, he'll have to live with the people who want to bring him down. It's just not necessary.

Jenson's had a shock defeat on the track news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_8092000/8092649.stmHow much do I want those cars? But they appear to be 1:32 scale Scalextric cars, and apparently the Brawn set won't be out in 1:32 until next year The 1:64 scale will be out in time for Christmas for anyone into MicroScalextric though.

I know. It's a disaster. I blame Ecclestone. He lost the plot a while ago and now it's all going down the toilet.

Hitler and the Poison Dwarf have a lot to answer for I hope FOTA go through with their plans and set up a new series, leaving the two dinosaurs with all the third-rate teams + Williams and Force India. About time Williams won something again

There needs to be a big change in the top flight of motor racing, and if this is what it takes, then it's sad, but fair enough. I just hope this doesn't mean the BBC gets left with the remains of F1 and the new series gets picked up by ITV... and gives them an excuse to bring back James Allen I'm following the developments with a great deal of interest... At least we may still get a proper British GP when the Gruesome Twosome get their own way, ruin it next season and then sell our slot to the highest bidder And while I'm here, Brawn, get Jenson's car sorted for tomorrow!!!

I think Max Hitler has totally lost the plot. On Wednesday he gave an interview to the Daily Express and said he would never, ever stand down from the FIA, then Thursday he announces that he's going in October and then today he is totally p*ssed off with the Ferrari boss and is on about staying on (and on and on and on.......... ). Do everyone a favour mate and b*gger off.....NOW!
