It's a dillema, isn't it. You can get one of the best jobs in the world: being the race driver on the most popular car show in the world. The pay is good, you get to travel the world, etc etc. But you are not allowed to tell anyone it is you behind the mask. Not even your best mates and parents know. Takes away a lot of the fun, in my opinion. I read bookmakers are now taking bets on who the new Stig will be. Wonder how they will settle that.

Someone posted this link on the Telegraph website earlier today, in the comments section of James's most recent column. Near the end of the programme (26 minutes), Jeremy gives his opinion on the recent Stig saga. www.witneytv.co.uk

Perhaps I've missed why he's doing this, but it seems suddenly quite spiteful. After all the years he's worked on TG, what's made him turn around and bite the hand that fed him so well? I know money can buy nearly anyone's soul these days, but it must be a big kick in the teeth to everyone who has known Collins and worked with him. Still, no doubt I will be reading all about it. ;D

What happened to loyalty Failed F3/2 driver finds a nice little number whizzing round the TG track (at £5000 per epi - alledgedly) and, despite having a confidentiality contract, decides to tell all. No wonder Jezzer is annoyed

I just so hope there are no really nasty "revelations". Whatever this tw*t has to say will be lapped up, unfortunately, by some sections of the Great British Public - whether it's true, false or just greatly over-hyped/exaggerated in order to sell more books.

I think the best thing for the TG£ and Andy to do is to not even mention it when they come back on air and just get on with it, be it with a new stig or whatever

What will they call her? Lady Stig? She-Stig?
See ya, Ben... in a couple of years Top Gear will be off the air and you probably could have published your book with Andy's blessing, but you did a cash grab and that was that. Dumb move. Never burn your bridges, especially in television.

Oh dearie me! The ex - Stig isn't doing himself any favours is he? Maybe he should have thought about the possible consequences before he wrote his book instead of trying (and failing as far as I'm concerned) to put a 'bullying' spin on the story. Given that not many people had heard of Ben Collins before, I suppose he has got some publicity out of the whole mess but it's not shown him in a good light I think TG are well rid of him.

My sympathy for Ben is dropping off sharply. So what if he was a mascot? He was well-loved, larger than life, he had book publishers and interviewers panting for the day he could openly give interviews as the Stig That Was, he had work guaranteed for at least another year or so, and he could drive pretty much anything he wanted. Was that just too difficult a life for him? Were there other factors involved, like some kind of non-disclosure agreement that would extend past the end of Top Gear? Personality conflict with Andy? Increased presence of stalkers and paparazzi? Surely this could have been handled better.

I might take a look at his book when it comes out....then slyly replace it in the 'Hardback Fiction' area of the shop ;D Seriously, bullying? His job was good as long as he kept quiet......he could have stayed with TG until the whole programme stopped running. Will anybody be able to take him seriously any more? All he's doing here is portraying himself as somebody that will break a contract and then start rumours about his former employers. Doesn't look good from any angle, this.

I agree with you guys. I just can't believe that the man had the dream job that thousands of people would kill for and he gave it all up for what? More money? He can't have been that poorly compensated - h*ll - I would do his job, albeit poorly, for free!He not only broke his contract but it is obvious that he hurt his friends as well. Hope he can live with himself. I know I wouldn't be able to.

flatin5th, as the board's sole testosterone factor, whom would you nominate for Ms. Stig? Danica Patrick could fill the coveralls, no doubt, but I don't think she has the skill.
Personally I don't think they would have a female Stig -- not because of sexism but because the talent pool is so much smaller. They would have to pick a relative unknown or risk it being narrowed down almost immediately to a list of 5-10.

Danica Patrick could fill the coveralls... Yeah, but the problem with her is that while she might fill them, she wouldn't do the bloody things up. She'd probably have a clause that allowed her to drive in a white bikini with the trademark helmet, gloves and boots... ;D Mind you, it looks like slightly grubby looking artist Tracey Emin (the one who was famous for displaying her dirty, unmade bed as art) has decided that she should do the job...

Ms Patrick is too commited to the USA - I dont think she could do it regularly. Sabine Schmit might be capable, but she would be easily spotted. VBH? How well do they get on these days? There are quite a few ladies racing in the UK, but none at the top of their tree!
We could go back a few years - Michele Mouton, or Louise Aitken-Walker - but these are rally driving ladies!
There isnt really a lot to pick from that would be quick!

I meant to mention this on Sunday, but forgot. In the 'In Gear' section of the Sunday Times is an 'exclusive - 'The Stig Lifts the Lid onthe Top Gear Years.' On the front cover is the Stig without helmet and inside is an extract of his book.
