I read somewhere that once the Stig (s) 's identity becomes public, it's in his contract that he has to leave the show! If this is the case, surely he would have more to gain by staying in the show rather than going public and revealing all. Thought it was a bit stiff though that BBC are flogging his image on merchandise but Stig isn't getting anything!

It's a shame it's reached this stage. You would have thought someone at an earlier stage would have tried to sort it out to everyone's mutual satisfaction.

I read about this last night - really gutted if it's true. Though I must say, it is terribly unfair to Stig, if he's been getting a raw deal out of it all. There has to be a way it can be worked out while keeping him anonymous, one would think!

Whoever he is, he's a helluva driver.
Having known more than a few drivers in my time, though, I should rather hope he doesn't "reveal all" (ooh errr) in the way my mind immediately went when I read this thread title!
In my defence, ladies, it's quarter past ten at night where I am. *AHEM* ;D

I have a feeling this is a negotiation-type move in an attempt to get a larger share of the proceeds from Top Gear. "Cut me in or I'll publish an autobiography and you'll have to find a new Stig."

ITA - and hopefully The Powers That Be will increase his paycheck - or at least let him romp with the mountain goats more often. I wonder if I sent him an "employee appreciation incentive" from NOLA, like a couple of pounds of rum pralines or some absinthe, if Stiggy would then reconsider his decision

Aww, I really hope this doesn't get all out of hand, I like the "White" Stig and another colour just doesn't feel right I am giggling over the idea of a "rainbow" Stig though... ;D It is unfair of the BBC to sell his image and for him to not get any money though - poor Stiggy! ;D

Ohhhh, feck!! I expect this sort of muckraking from the Daily Fail, but I can't believe it's Jezza's own paper that broke the story D: The Times Christmas party is going to be awkward this year. I will be so sad to see this Stig go! It's going to be worse than David Tennant leaving Dr Who : (

The Sunday Times has a whole page article on the Stig aka Ben Collins (they say.) They have done some delving into contracts with Top Gear and also The Stig (Collins?) ordered a large photo of himself from when TG was recorded on The Salt Pans. They put forward other bits of 'evidence' as well, but I gave up reading.

Argh, why are the newspapers so intent on spoiling it for everyone? I know whoever The Stig is is upset, but why are the newspapers making it ten thousand times worse? Oh right, yeah, because newspapers like the Daily Fail (love the name by the way ;D) have nothing better to do...

They really are such killjoys when it comes to TG. There is no point to it. I try so hard not to pay attention to it, because it only makes my teeth grind.

I have no knowledge of how UK and EU law works, so the following is basically me talkin' outta my a$$. The concept of The Stig was created by Jezza, and either he or the BBC or both own the rights to this concept as their intellectual property. They can control how the idea is used and can prohibit unauthorized use. Stig alledgedly signed a contract agreeing to keep his identity a secret under penalty of termination.
Stig could argue that since newspapers revealed his actual name last year, the confidentiality is a moot point. But it was his own actions (displaying Stig outfit in his home) that led to the 2009 outing.
If he only handles driving duties, while other people are Stig for press conferences and wrestling cocks from Hamster, Stig could say that his true identity was partially but not fully revealed.
Another argument could be that revealing Stig's identity does not damage the idea, a la Black Stig. Black Stig was fired after he unmasked, but Top Gear continued to use the Stig concept albeit with a different color. This prolly won't work since White Stig has a much higher profile, with hundreds of millions of viewers for Top Gear and his image on coffee mugs, t-shirts, cakes, toys etc. BBC and Bedder 6 will take a financial hit for White Stig merchandising that doesn't sell, costs to change production from White Stig to Different Colored Stig, or lost merchandising revenue and potential future profits if they retire the Stig concept and just have Jay Kay take the cars around the track.
I think White Stiggy might be well and truly f$cked.
Perhaps we could have next Pink Stiggy/Stigette, with Sabine or Emma Parker-Bowles under the helmet. Maybe Jezza and Andy could borrow the TARDIS and have White Stig "regenerated" like a Time Lord (White Stig with a long coat/scarf?). After all, three former Doctors have had a go around the track.

All this makes me feel so very sad, a couple of you have already alluded to the fact that the press in general are out to destroy the magic of Top Gear in general terms and this sort of story plays right into their hands. Who knows how much of what we read is true or hype/conspiracy? There is so much anti Top Gear/Clarkson stuff in the press and sadly I feel that if enough people read enough of these sort of headlines for long enough they will start to side with the press and believe it. Face it Daily Mail etc, Top Gear is highly successful and we should be proud that a brand like this has encapsulated the hearts of fans the world over, why tear it apart? Why do we mock success so much in the UK?
Sorry for the above rant ladies but it just makes me both sad and mad all at the same time.

What The Stig and his publishers are up against! Andy Wilman's take on all this in the attached link. I thought it was very interesting, but I would have liked him to address the question about the BBC exploiting The Stig's character yet (allegedly) none of the proceeds going to the Stig. If this is the case, perhaps the rationale is that the Stig is simply "intellectual property". I think it's a bit rough though if the bloke in the costume isn't getting a cut of the profits. transmission.blogs.topgear.com/2010/08/27/the-stig-he-is-ours/

Well, in my opinion, TGITSS (The Guy In The Stig Suit) didn't add anything substancial to the actual development of the character and I'm sure he gets paid a very decent salary for his job. James and Richard don't get a cut either from the profits from all the TopGear merchandise. Jezza does, but that is because he and Andy own the company that makes TopGear for the BBC, if I remember correctly.
Problem is of course that he can't use being on Top Gear to further his career, like James and Richard have been able do so succesfully. My guess is that TGITSS had decided to leave the show anyway and wanted to make some extra money out of it.
