7:50 PM here in Ohio and it's 96 degrees outside. DOH! That's BAD! I'm glad it's not that hot here yet. The nuclear power plant down the road is offline due to "construction defects". I'm not sure what's going to happen when we all turn on our AC units here. Blackouts or brownouts I guess.

It was 96 degrees here this afternoon, and then the s**t will hit the proverbial fan this weekend. All three days are supposed to be over 100 degrees here in the Mid Atlantic; it will be a good time to spend indoors, doing all the things I needed to do last month!

I remember how bad DC summers are. Swampy is putting it lightly. At least in Cal. when it gets that hot it's dry like an oven. Painful but not chokingly humid and hot. We just wait nervously for things to catch fire. Are the locusts making their noise yet? WEEE-o WEEE-o. The sound of summer. Not yet hot enough here for them to sing.

And it's suppose to be even hotter today, adrianmay. It's almost 6AM and it's 77 degrees already, I took the dogs out and it feels even hotter then that.

Please remember, dear ladies, that we in the UK are in general knee-deep in water and gloom! Yet again, it's late morning and I have the lights in the house as it's too dark even to read the paper. I don't think I can remember a time when in June - June, goddamit! - I've had to wear my waterproof cagoule every day (or at least take it out with me). Harumph.

It's hot all right here in Maryland while Colorado and New Mexico burn. They are going to close the Bosque in Albuquerque (the area along the Rio Grande) and of course no fireworks except maybe in a controlled setting. I miss the dry weather. I'd forgotten how the air can be like soup.

We need rain so badly, but this hot weather spawns thunderstorms, which I hate. The rain falls so fast it just runs off. Some nice gentle rain for a day would be much appreciated!

After a day of amazingly high heat, the thunderstorms are rolling through. The rain is bucketing down and lightning and thunder are cracking all around. I looked on the Weather Channel's website and I see there is an even larger storm hard on the heels of this one; perhaps the heat won't be as oppressive tomorrow.

After being in the 50's and rainy early in the week, it's now 90's and quite humid. "They" say here in New England, if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute.

The day after the night before....it is in the triple digits here in DC and the raging violent storms that went through last night left their marks. Over 1.3 million people in the DC area are without power, 5 people died as a result, and so many beautiful mature trees fell in the high winds.
Thankfully, Alain had no power outage, although right over the line into Montgomery County, Maryland, I would venture to say that the vast majority of people are without power. I passed a liquor store on my way in and scads of people were lined up to buy ice.

I am one of those people without power. don't know when it will be restored. Could be days. PG county alone has over 50 thousand outages. My son in Albuquerque is the one that informed me of what was going on. My lap top was down. My cousin's husband hooked up a generator to the refrig, freezer a fan and the tv. I am literally burning up. I don't know why things move so slowly on the east coast. In Albuquerque the most we ever went without power was about 6 hours. I hope things improve quickly.I'm sorry to hear about the deaths connected to this storm. Apparently Virginia got hit quite hard.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, Vivienne and all in whichever part of the US it is. Think cool thoughts - Alpine streams, glaciers, snowdrifts, England in November..
Helping at all?
Thought not...

Amie8, both Vivienne and I are in Maryland, outside Washington, DC. Summers here are ordinarily hot and humid. with slaps and dashes of thunderstorms. This phenomenon which went through last night was called a <<derecho>> (straight ahead) because it lost no strength as the system plowed across the country.
Vivienne, here's hoping you get your electricity back very soon. The thermometer in my car read 105 degrees as I arrived at Alain's home. I cannot imagine life without AC in this weather.

It's made the news over here: www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/30/death-toll-storms-heat-usActually, there's nothing unusual about that. Exceptional weather event stories are popular in the Guardian, as it gives the readers a chance to drag out the old "climate change, man-made or not?" debate, as illustrated by the comments below the article. Suggest you don't read them if you're in a good mood, because you won't be for long.

Amie8, the photo at the top of the page shows the Supreme Court building, just across from the Capitol.
Agreed, some of the comments posted after this article are just plain mean-spirited. Although I assume many of the comments came from readers in the US, UK readers have no idea what we are going through.

We have lengthy power outages here in New England. Twelve hours to a couple of days is common, and it can be as much as a couple of weeks in a bad ice storm. I (and many other people) have generators. Good luck and keep us posted.

It's dull, grey and wet, so therefore it feels cold even though it isn't really that bad.
(I'm British - it would be out of character not to be complaining about the weather.)

Electricity is back on. It took 36 hours to get it done and many are still without power. Already 80 degrees. I still look at the Albuquerque weather instead of the Bowie weather so I don't know the outlook. I like rain. I would rather be in the UK instead of here.

We had thunderstorms again last night, but nothing of the intensity of last Friday night. It's not quite as hot today as it has been, although it is still very warm and sunny!

The intense heat has settled back onto the East Coast. I looked on the Weather Channel's website, and Friday and Saturday are supposed to be well over 100 degrees, with the heat indices reaching 115 degrees. It's time for this to be over now; I hope we can send some of this sunshine (but not the heat) to my friends in the UK!

We could do with some sunshine here. Yet again I wake up to rain and wind. The rain is set to be torrential and there are 80 flood alerts in place. The school where I used to work are set for a day at the seaside today, it will be grim, poor kids. Roll on ten days time when I should be sunning myself in Italy.

It's raining.
Olympic torch went through town this morning - in and out before breakfast. Some seriously bedraggled kids on the street.
Did I mention it's raining?

Grey here too. We've just bought new garden furniture but can't see a time when we will be able to use it at this rate.
Where are you going in Italy, Eshalda? I love that country with a passion but if you're hiring a car......beware! MOH got one speeding ticket and two traffic violations last time we went (not understanding the signs in Rome didn't help)

OK Mother Nature, listen up! ENOUGH ALREADY!!!
I am sick and tired of having to put my lights on all day just to see my way around the house. I am utterly fed up of wearing my waterproof cagoule every day if I want to go out. I have had enough of sitting watching the driving rain outside my window, so beaten into submission that I sometimes find myself feeling a little impressed that water can bounce back up that high from the road.
It is fracking July, for frack's sake! Lighten up (literally) and give us all a break!
