Amie8, the problem is that Hurricane Sandy will be meeting up with what is called a "nor'easter" and the power and rage of these two storms will create a horrible mess. Do you remember the film called "The Perfect Storm"? It was based on a similar circumstance, but I understand this approaching storm will be even bigger.

My son called me because he heard we could get up to 15" of rain. I told him to calm down. I then called my brother who was supposed to go home to Abq today to find out he stayed in NY because he's running in the marathon next week. He doesn't seem too concerned. Deal with it as it comes.

Sandy is still classified as a Hurricane. The forecast for my area is 5" of rain and sustained winds of 40 mph with 60 mph gusts. We are already under a flood watch and it hasn't even started raining.

Same here. I had seen that we could get from 6 to 10 inches of rain. If that were snow, it would be 60 to 100 inches!

It's still fricken' hot 92F/ 33.3C and the Santa Anas (dry hot winds from the desert) are blowing. There's a Red Flag warning for fire danger in the canyon behind my house AND there's a tsunami warning. Maybe the tsunami will put out any fires in the canyon? The Santa Anas are infamous for making people ill who are sensitive to allergens. They stir-up pollens and dust and dry out your sinuses. Surprise, my husband and I are sick. Someday winter will come, right?

Hope there's not actually a tsunami though, cripes those things are terrifying. (I heard about the 7.7 earthquake....just now)

The USGS website has some pretty cool earthquake info and maps. The quake here last week cracked the foundation in my newly constructed garage, even though it was only a M 4.0. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/

Some of my happiest holidays have been on barges, I'm a dab hand with a windlass. Just whereabouts are you on the Leeds Liverpool canal (and going in which direstion for that matter?) Have you tackled Bingley Five Rise locks, or been through Skipton yet? Looking at the first picture it looks as though it could be the pumping station at the top of Bingley Five Rise. Fizz looks like an excellent crew member Fizz looks like an excellent crew member

I'm sitting here in the lowest borough of NYC waiting for Sandy. Anybody here waiting her out, too? I know there's a few New Englanders here, I can't be the only one! Get yer flashlights ready! I should really read further up before I post. Good ole' Sandy is a Cat 1 Hurricane meeting up with a nor'easter and a jet stream that's dipped real low over the middle states. Plus, it's HUGE apparently. Looks like it covers the entire east coast at this point. Be careful out there everyone!

We're prepared for Sandy and her sister storm. Everything is charged, candle supplies are laid in and batteries are at the ready. Do your worst! ;D Sorry to hear about your foundation, Fizzy.

Thanks DMC. I think it will be OK. About 80 miles from the epicenter and we still got shaken up pretty good. I'm sure we're not getting out of this storm without snow.

Looks like both coasts of the USA are getting their share of rotten weather! Right now, it's raining here in Maryland but there's not much wind. Washington, DC will be ghost town tomorrow as the Federal Government has been shut down, the subway closes tonight at midnight, and most school systems in Virginia and Maryland will be closed. My college is also closed so I shall be a right layabout tomorrow; I also have no rehearsal tomorrow night, either!

Weather here is what can only be described as "miserable". The convergence of a hurricane and a winter storm would probably be described as "a bit grim".
Thinking of everyone on the east coast of USA over the next couple of days. Keep us posted - assuming you can.

Adding my good luck messages for all those at risk from the weather in the US.
We were warned about 'bad weather' here over the weekend - where I was it was 'bright but chilly' on Saturday and 'damp but milder' on Sunday. I've heard about some snow on Saturday night that quickly dissipated. Compared to what you're facing, that was a doddle (though I may be tempting fate!)

The rain has begun here, but it's still reasonably light. The wind isn't really gusting yet. Some places in Maine have already lost power, so I'm guessing the wind is on its way.

the weather here is not too bad. All pales into insignificance when the weather news from America has just been on the TV!
Yes - we passed through Bingley with its 5-rise and 3-rise yesterday, and we are now overnighting in Skipton!

The rain and heavy winds have begun here in Maryland. Trouble is, the worst is yet to come tonight. As of now, I have electricity, cable and internet. Everything is closed all over the place, including the federal, state, and local governments are closed as are most schools. In some places, you will be issued a traffic ticket if you are just out driving.

Right now in Southern Ontario the winds are howling at a fairly steady 55 km/h (around 32 mph) with gusts over 100 km/h (60 mph) and it's raining merrily. The temperature seems to have gone up slightly and we're now sitting at 8 degrees Celsius (47 F); we're at no risk for snow in our area but we are in the "red zone" alert level on the Weather Network's warning map. Forecast is calling for continued crummy weather on Tuesday and into the early part of Wednesday. Hurricane Sandy won't swamp us (I hope); more danger will come from the possibility of trees getting knocked down in the wind and severing power lines. My heart goes out to everyone on the Atlantic coast that is coping with true severe weather and inland flooding from the storm surges *yikes*. Hang in there!

I know what you mean -- I drove to work for 10am and spent nine hours there watching the parking lot flood, empty and get blow-dried by the wind only to have it start all over again! I love a good storm but this will be an awfully rough one on a lot of people. After work I picked up a few "storm supplies" at the grocery store (ahhh, chicken noodle soup, you've never failed me yet ;D ) and headed home, where I'm currently curled up with my laptop and my two cats purring at my feet while what sounds like an entire lake is emptying above my house.

Here's what Sandy left on our door step this morning. It's still snowing but the wind have died down considerably from last night. We were lucky, the storm hit many places hard South and East of us.

The winds have abated somewhat but it is still raining quite hard. I lost electricity last night/this morning for 8 hours, but luckily it was at night. But for October, it is VERY cold, only in the low 40s. Everything is still closed, but I believe several mall stores opened on time. Isn't that just typical? Making people go out in this dreadful weather to work is unconscionable!
