The Daily Fail are at it again it seems.
More examples of the BBC being victimised! Harriet Harman is a grade a tw*t, does she really have nothing better to do than dream up stupid f**king laws to further interfere in peoples lives? This country is in a bad enough state because of her and her stupid moronic party. It's about time she shut her mouth and pissed off and left things alone. She really needs a slap.
Sorry, I got a bit angry there.

Harriet Useless is a prat of the first order. Her latest big idea has gone down like a lead balloon with employers who have pointed out (quite rightly) that they have more important things to worry about - like going bankrupt Nice one Wilman Nailed it perfectly ;D ;D

Also, if TG changed, the viewing numbers would plummet, part of the reason why we all tune in is because of the connection the guys have with one another. It is like being 'let in' to a very private in joke that they all have going on with one another, like we are getting a priviledged peek into something we shouldn't be seeing. That is exciting. Am I making sense? P.S. Good on you, Mr Wilman!!

'Secondly, if we are to have a female presenter just to represent the sexes, then by that logic Loose Women needs a bloke in the line-up pretty sharpish.'*Applaudes Andy* ;D Exactly!

Yet another example of political correctness taken to a silly extreme. I believe in equality for all but that can be achieved without all of this hoohaa. My 2 cents worth!

Oh for goodness sake it would be spoilt if they have a female presenter (unless there was the exact chemistry between them all) TG has always been, since the revamp, 3 middle class blokes pratting about. Would it work with a woman pratting about too? It would just be too much. These people obviously don't look into the viewing figures and 50% are women. I agree with everything Andy says, it is utter drivell. Maybe if they had behind the scenes a few more women...I don't know. It's such a male environment....... however saying that, they have got Madison Welch on one of the episodes, so they have got their woman quota and I just hope it doesn't back fire. (I'll re-read this and hopefully it'll make sense)

Oh heavens... I'm not entirely sure the Waily Dail has got it right, quite - no surprise there!
The Equalities Bill doesn't have any explicit requirement for positive discrimination, even in jobs where there is a lack of a certain gender (male primary school teachers, female firefighters etc) so I doubt it'll be telling the Beeb off for having too many men on a motoring programme... (although I concur that programmes representing real life don't have a realistic mix of black minority ethnic people)
S'pose it's a good excuse to have more of Sabine Schmidt, though... I love it when she proves Jeremy wrong!

You would have thought she had more to do than fuss about the cast list for Top Gear. Obviously not. She probably claimed on expenses for a new TV in order to examine the problem, though.
Cynical? Moi? See below.

Bravo Andy!!! That man should be knighted (along with the other three ) What utter cr*p I think that "leading academic" needs to sit down and really watch TG instead of trying to find things wrong with it that don't even exist! Perhaps she would like to waste more of her time by trawling through the waiting list for tickets for TG and see just how many of them are women

I'm with you, UM. Down with Harriet Harman! That's the stupidest idea I've ever seen! Harriet Harman never mentioned Top Gear. She has only put forward a proposal in which state-funded organisations are being ordered to boost the proportion of female, black and gay staff to reflect the make-up of the UK population. It's Dr Louise Livesey, tutor in sociology and women's studies at Ruskin College, Oxford, who accused Top Gear of 'entrenched, institutional sexism'.

I went to a lecture given by her once (Dr Livesey, not Harriet Harman...) in which she was extolling the view that most scientific theory (geology, plate tectonics, evolution...) must be wrong becuase it was thought up by men. Er... no...

As I understand equality, it's treating people as equal, whatever their ethnicity, gender etc, so that means the best person for the job should get it. If all the best people for the job happen to be white & male, that's fine. If they all happen to be black/Asian/Martian & female that's fine too.
I thought acting was exempt as it would be a little unrealistic to cast (for example) Henry VIII as an ethnic female!

Yes, I understand Harriet Harman never mentioned TG but I think that TG was used as a 'classic' example of an all-male environment. Why TG though, why not a sports show or something else? Why was that specifically mentioned? I think it was because the DM just wanted to have another pop at TG, it must be one of their favourite pasttimes.

Other nearly all male (apart from a few occasions when 1 woman comes on) TV programmes are QI, Question of Sport, Have I got news for you, They think it's all over and Never mind the Buzzcocks. It's just because TG is an easy target and has 3 male presenters.

This article wasn't against Top Gear at all. In fact if you read the comments there are quite a number of shocked DM readers who all of a sudden find themselves defending TopGear. ;D More likely, the DM wanted to have a go at Labour's Harriet Harman and neatly connected her proposal to some crazy Oxford lecturer's outdated ideas about gender issues And unfortunately if you read the comments of the DM website, Final Gear and here, they have succeeded nicely.

Well I think there are more pressing issues facing this country at the moment, I suggest the present government worry about those first rather than whether there is enough women on the TV, sadly I care not for anymore fluff.

Football, snooker, rugby - can we have some girlies in on them then? Then again, my mum says that woman on F1 shouldn't be on it because it isn't a woman's place. I don't know. Perhaps we should all just call it a day on this planet and start again.

I stand by my original post. Harriet Hapless's proposals, in the current economic climate, are a disgrace, regardless of whether they affect TG. Still, I suppose it's easier than sorting out the real problems in this country

I hate sexism when it truly exists. I used to work in the stockroom in a bookshop, and it was the best job I ever had. But the new manager in the shop decided that being in the stockroom 'wasn't the job for a woman' and employed her son-in-law to do it, and shoved me into being in charge of the children's section - much more suitable for me THAT'S sexist. But (potentially) splitting up a successful team of people for the sake of being 'correct' is just silly.

Perhaps we should all just call it a day on this planet and start again. Actually, England's women's cricket team won the world cup last year. And the women's football team is really good. And there is a very large contingent of female snooker players, who have their own world championship going on at the mo. But they never get televised, for some reason. As for the Equalities Act not being important in the scheme of things, well, it kind of IS, in its actual form of ensuring gender pay equality in the workplace and fairer treatment for older people and people with disabilities in terms of employment and services. It's really NOT about people on telly as the Daily Wail is making it out to be.
