lol @ amie8 ;D god, I sometimes dont like being one of the youngest on this board.. Anyway, Im a collector of foreign/old money. I got to send a couple of Pounds to Mayfayre in England, because she's posting something for me to someone else on this board, and my brother does have bills of 10 pounds, left over from when he visited London twice with school. I also have LOADS of change and I was wondering if anyone could help me with telling me which ones are still being used in England. There's some Irish money between it, don't bother.

There you go Nat - this shows all the UK coinage in the system now although the picture on the 'tail' side of the coins will change frequently. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coins_of_the_pound_sterling

I found out something interesting about the UK. I can't send actual pounds thru the mail. I don't know if they scan stuff because I was going to do that.

Most countries don't want coins to be sent through their international mail. I've no idea why, but I couldn't send any coins to my nieces when they were in Singapore. They were having a nationality day at school and wanted to show some American money. Guess not. Mind you, I sent Nat a State of Maine quarter and no one kicked up a fuss. Of course there was no room on the customs form to declare it.

by the way, DMC, youre a collector of money as well, arent you?

I do dabble a bit. MOH inherited his aunt's coin collection, and I keep an eye out for interesting and unusual coins.

This is kind of a hobby. Well, I intend for it to be, anyway... I've always had an interest in the way cars work: which parts are which and what they contribute, what role fuel plays etc. I've also been interested in how cars have evolved and the reasons for their evolution, both from an engineering and a cultural viewpoint (probably the latter more so). Anyway, because I don't have a money tree and I traditionally don't have much spare time on my hands, I've never bothered to really find out about all this stuff. My knowledge is fairly scant and I've never been an active "mechanical" type, mostly for the reasons already given but also because I've thought that people around me would think it to be a bit weird - or should I say, "out of character" - from their perspective. But the interest has always been there, lying dormant. Now, I want this to change. Perhaps it's a type of New Year's Resolution. I'd like to be able to lift the car bonnet up and know what I'm looking at. Even better, I'd like to be able to identify problems and even be able to fix them. Something that will help the process along is that my first home is currently being built - which will be finished very soon, fingers crossed - and I'll have a decent garage with it as well. Potentially, a genuine Girl Shed. ;D Here's hoping I'll have the time and the drive (no pun intended) to give this a closer look next year...especially as my last car service cost nearly a grand.

Pie, same here!! Ive always wanted ti find out more about how cars work - every single detail. What Id really want to do one day is work at a garage, for once a week or so.... Not more, because I have tjhe idea the men that are working there are dirty and not nice to women. By the way, I was capable of sending 3 Pounds to the UK!

A Girl Shed, Pie. I am all for it. I'd love to learn more about cars; all I really have learned is that more horsepower = good and I really want a Lambo, regardless of what James says. I enjoy drawing (cartooning mostly; my art is floating on the board somewhere), writing and on the rare occasion, I can do some light weaving. I made this bracelet for James before Thanksgiving and mailed it to him earlier in the month (keep your fingers crossed for a reply!). It has Lego colors in it (red, black, blue, white and yellow, plus light blue for his eyes because I needed an even # of strands to make it work). I couldn't think of anything more fitting for him than those colors (and members of this board gave me the idea of Lego, actually). It didn't take me that long to make and I have been making them for years; I learned how to make them at a summer camp when I was small. I had some left over bits from his bracelet, which I made into one for myself, and now I wear it all the time. I just hope he likes this one I made him; it'll probably be a little big since I couldn't really measure his wrist from 6,000 miles away. So if anyone sees him wearing it, I made it. ;D ;D

Hello there. My first post so please bare with me. My hobby is definitely doing the most nerdy things. All my friends think I am a bit "odd".
I adore history and love to just drive around for endless hours to visit some old property, castle or landmark. It's becoming rather an obsession than a hobby. Reading about history, particularly The English Civil War. I'm also into watching WWII films at the moment.
Other things include museums. About anything really. I like to think that anything can possibly be interesting. Of course, many places I end up being bored to death by some mad person blowing glass or trying to persuade me that a pencil is amazing, but I also often find out interesting facts about things I originally knew diddly squat about.
In between visiting and reading up on things "interesting" I also love being in pubs. Old pubs, you know the type... proper pubs. You know a real pub when it sells pickled eggs. I like a drop of ale and have a career plan of visiting every old English Inn by the time I reach the great gig in the sky. So they are my hobbies.
I have been reading your hobbies and you certainly are quite an eclectic bunch. Marvellous!

My partner works for El Mail de Royal. It's because your post will probably not make it. There are a lot of postmen who are not often the most genuine of jolly chaps. So they feel there's money in the envelope and amazingly, it ends up in their pocket. also, don't sellotape envelopes, especially cards, it's an absolute giveaway that it's stashed with cash.

Hi missburlo and welcome! ;D I find war history very interesting as well, yet like cars, it's one of those things I haven't bothered to immerse myself in. Until recently, I hadn't really comprehended just how significant the two World Wars were in terms of how they changed the way we did (and do) things. It's quite staggering how much has evolved in such a relatively short space of time. Nat, I'd like to work as a mechanic too but I'm also put off by the culture behind the occupation. It wouldn't be easy finding a workplace that wasn't discriminatory in some way. Take the people out of it and I'd definitely give it a go! ElerVim, the bracelet's great. Imagine if it did actually turn up on screen at some point!

Welcome Missburlo to the haven of fans that tend to spend a lot of time here. I am from New Mexico but I love English history and know more about it than American history. Something about castles etc. I read a lot about different things, no science, liberal arts here.

American History is where my ignorance lies I am afraid. I know absolutely nothing about it. In relation to WWII, I went to Krakow last year and visited Auschwitz. (I really know how to party on holiday) I would recommend it. It's very nicely set up as a memorial as well as a realisation as to how cruel mankind can be.
I don't know a great deal about cars either. I'm one of those rather pathetic ladies who doesn't know how to put air in the tyres. Yes, I know... extremely pathetic. Nor do I know why or how an engine works, how to check the treads on tyres, how to change a fuse, or how to change a tyre. If I like the look of a car, it's cheap and works, then I'm ok. As for May's Panda... Rubbish. Chris couldn't close the door when I went to test drive one, as he's too tall. It's pretty bad when you cannot close a door. Opted for a VW foxy fox instead.
I like going to classic car shows though. Again, a history thing. I would love to own an old vehicle. There's a chap in Pickering who restores 1950s Rovers and places new engines in them. I am very tempted to buy one, but again, back to me being pathetic, I am too weussy to drive without power steering. I have done it briefly and just moaned (quite alot).

Crikey, with all those notes, I'd be heading to the nearest foreign exchange office pronto! ;D The French coins reminded me of how much of a klutz I was when I visited Paris earlier this year. I learnt French at school; back in those days, they used Francs. So I put 20 pounds on the counter and asked for French Francs. Of course, I was given Euros. What an idiot. ;D

oh and Pie, we'd best invent a new mecanic workplace then, where either only women are allowed or where disrimination will be punished. ;D Read: one gets fired immediately.

Nat get rid of those dollars they aren't worth a crap. You know what? I actually found this comment quite rude. People collect things because they like them, not necessarily because they're worth anything. A lot of the things I collect aren't "worth a crap" as you say, but I'd be highly offended if you told me to throw them out, because they're my things and I have them because I want them. [/soapbox]

Daisy I'm sorry you found it rude. We have collected money and stamps thru the years including old American money. I guess it's because on my trip they really weren't worth much. To be truthful I would never say that about another country's money or stamps. I felt since it was my currency I could make a negative statement about it. Have a Happy New Year with your chocolates and solitude.Paula

oh and Pie, we'd best invent a new mecanic workplace then, where either only women are allowed or where disrimination will be punished. ;D Read: one gets fired immediately. You know, as a business venture, a service centre with only female employees could actually work really well (although it's probably been done before). Whenever I take my car in for a service, I never really know if I'm getting ripped off or not, even if they're nice people. I'm not a feminist and I have nothing against men, but I'd imagine something like that would gain popularity if the business was built on honesty from the start.

That's an excellent idea. What bugs me is your car is acting funny, you take it in and it doesn't do whatever it was for the mechanic, you leave and it starts again. Years ago I got quite irate because this happened and chased the mechanic down and his boss and have them wait for the noise. New starter. Do you think men would wonder if the women were capable. Let's get Sabine.
