Alain and I drove to Bethesda, Maryland this evening for the purpose of seeing a very good French movie (Les Adieux a Ma Reine) and then having a nice dinner. Well, the movie was sold out, but we had a DELICIOUS dinner at a nice restaurant called Mon Ami Gabi, right in the middle of Bethesda. I began with a lovely butter lettuce and arugula salad and he had wonderful escargots. Strangely enough, here in the US, they are served without a shell! I then had a perfectly wonderful house made pate with cornichons, and he had a grilled skate wing with a puree of cauliflower. I cannot remember such a marvelous meal; I had a wonderful pinot noir and he had two glasses of Vouvray, which made him purr! Believe me, we'll go back there soon!

I was just going to ask you if you'd eaten at Le Gaulois on King St. in Old Town Alexandria and.. THEY ARE CLOSED. It looks like chapter 11 got them. I'm gutted. Wonderful food, small intimate atmosphere and pas cher. I wonder where the chefs went?

Adrianmay, I just hate when a successful restaurant closes its doors. We tend not to go into Virginia because Maryland is closer as is the District, but we have had favorite places close because of circumstances beyond their control.
I was very pleased to see that the restaurant where we dined last night was very full. I must admit that Bethesda was hopping! It has changed so dramatically in the past 10 years from a sleepy little 'burb to a thriving town.

I must confess, in the wake of Hostess' demise, I have bought a box of Devil Dogs. Now to the question...red or white?

We shall be having a rather non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow: boneless rib eye roast, green beans with shallots and slivered almonds, a mixture of wild, red, brown, and white rices, and of course, pumpkin pie. My dad and SO don't like turkey, and I'm not wild about it and all the leftovers it provides.
