Boat was launched this afternoon, source from Facebook Garmin site. On an earlier post they mentioned Jeremy launching it and James being on the boat. However James isn't doing the race due to other commitments.

More likely insurance. Presenters, actors, etc. are generally not permitted to do anything that could put a production at risk (though obviously, in the case of Top Gear making the show itself carries a certain amount of inherent risk). Also, the studio dates for TG hadn't been confirmed when this was first mooted and as the first recording date is 18th June, there would be serious problems with scheduling I would have thought. If it had been later in the run, it might have been more manageable, I suppose, but even so, James wouldn't be able to spend a lot of time on board really. Bit of a pity, but the BBC seem to have messed the TG crew about a bit on scheduling, and this is probably where the difficulty has arisen.

I'm afraid crew aren't as hard to insure as people in front of the camera; they're also easier to replace, even temporarily, if the regular camera person is unavailable. A production doesn't tend to stand or fall by its crew, whereas a presenter getting damaged... well, we've seen what that can do to a show already.
(and I mean no disrespect to Iain May by this - it's just the way these things tend to work)
As for Mr Knowles, if the show in question is DIY SOS (due to start airing this month), that series is just about in the can - as it doesn't have topical content it doesn't need to be recorded as close to the airdate as TG does. Looking at his website, the BBC have kept his schedule clear around the race, whereas James's is probably a bit hectic at the moment!

did they not film the WA in july - aug? that was in France and USA, however the seasons are slightly different so the could be doing spirits like gin and whisky in the hotter months (July/Aug) and then progress to the vineyards where the grapes would be ripening (August/September) ish time when the grapes have ripened. However the grapes for sparkling vine would be harvested earlier. this is only specualtion, the camera people may want pretty shots of vines and grapes, well you've seen how arty the shots do get. But again, who knows but keep your eyes peeled.

Apparently James is no longer taking part in this race as it clashes with his Oz and James commitments?

I would just ignore that piece of News that mentions James. They just havent changed it. Its a shame for James because he wanted to do this boat race didn't he?

There's no date anywhere on that press release as far as I can see. I wouldn't get my hopes up that he is going to be doing it.
